"Now a-days one could be arrested for assault." That's true IF IF the landlady could PROVE to the police that the assault actually happened.   You're taking up the landlady's story without a scintilla of evidence, that the story is true. Many folks offered disparaging tales about Lee Oswald AFTER  the newspapers had smeared him.   

She did testify under oath. That is all we have.
 Where I live...the police arrest first and ask questions later....evidence is what ever they choose to believe.
I did not 'take up the story'... I continue to research. Note that no one else has ever reported this testimony on the forum.
