He envisioned himself as Herb Philbrick the FBI agent who pretended to be a communist so that he could infiltrate the communist cells that were bent on destroying the United States.
There have been men like Lee all through our history ...unsung heroes who were reviled by their fellow Americans because they portrayed themselves as anti American ..... Even George Washington had spies that appeared to be anti American and pro British...

Oswald was offered legal representation but refused, claiming he wanted a New York lawyer named John Apt.
Oswald apparently answered a lot of general questions and only got angry and stopped talking when the questions became more pointed regarding the events of the day. Tell us why an 'innocent' Oswald should not address those questions.
If you are ever arrested for something, and are truly innocent, I suggest you answer all questions put to you.

Every 8 out of 10 suspects being interrogated waive their rights and start yacking away. Once they start talking most just keep going and going. Techniques to identify tells from the suspect are learned through training and experience. If the suspect has cohorts in the crime he or she is arrested for and suspected of committing you can set the time when he or she will identify their partner(s).

That's true IF IF the landlady could PROVE to the police that the assault actually happened. You're taking up the landlady's story without a scintilla of evidence, that the story is true. Many folks offered disparaging tales about Lee Oswald AFTER the newspapers had smeared him. Those folks simply wanted to help put the noose around the neck of his corpse. Those folks would be no different than the animals who dragged our soldiers bodies through the streets of Mogadishu.

I can understand why a secret agent might not want to strike up conversations with gossipy old women.... If he didn't talk to them there wasn't much they could tell anybody who might come around asking questions.
