I can't remember where I first heard it but it's a bad idea not matter what you call it. If the government hands out $5000 checks and doesn't offset it with cuts in other areas, it's going to be inflationary. If there is a windfall from the tariffs, I'd rather see it used to pay down the debt which would have a cooling effect on inflation and benefit the American people every bit as much as a handout. But since this is an election year, paying down the debt wouldn't make as big a splash as "free money". People don't understand that it's zero sum game. The more dollars the government puts into circulation, the less purchasing power those dollars will have.

I don't understand the government handing out money. If the government could make people richer by handing out money, why stop at $5000. Why not give everybody a million dollars? Yes, people will have more dollars to spend but the dollars they have will be worth a lot less. We should have learned that from the Covid stimulus checks. That triggered the sky high inflation during the Biden years. The same thing will happen if Trump goes through with this. I can almost understand the first round of stimulus checks because the economy needed a jump start but the next two rounds were overkill. I didn't get excited about the Covid stimulus checks because I knew they wouldn't increase my buying power. Neither will this if they go through with it. Government handouts are just a way of making people feel better without doing a thing to improve their lives. The only way handing out $5000 to everyone makes sense would be if they offset it by cutting government spending in other areas and we know they aren't going to do that, no matter which party is in power.

Trump is not giving money to anyone.  I support his policies but he often thinks out loud with all sorts of ideas that never come to fruition.  Some of which are terrible.  I think it's entirely possible, however, that AI will create such efficiency and wealth that few may have to work in the near term future.  Not sure what the implications are from that but government policies that promote such efficiencies could result in rewarding citizens with such payments and services.  Maybe providing incentives to be good citizens including reducing crime and promoting art and education.  We are not forever limited to the capitalist vs socialist choices.  The opposition to data centers is futile.  There are legitimate concerns, but it is still coming for good or ill.  China and others are not going to hold back.  The US has no real choice.  Trump knows that.  It would not surprise me if the anti-data center campaign is even being funded by the Chinese.

I suspect that MAGATS who were dismissive of the dangers of Covid are equally naive about the threat that the development of "superintelligent AI" poses mankind.

     The above sounds like "Star Trek" (The Original Series). People were free to take their lives in whatever direction they wanted. Do nothing? Fine! Take on the "Kobayashi Maru"? Fine! What we are seeing is what you get from a POTUS that is consistently moving the country forward. And NOT having to concern himself with being re-elected.
     The "data centers" and AI hoopla is just people being afraid of the unknown. If you fear this, then separate yourself from your cell phone. Certainly DO NOT attach your house heat/air to a cell phone.  Buy yourself a "burner" and "break glass in case of fire" if need be. The landline remains.
