I don't understand the government handing out money. If the government could make people richer by handing out money, why stop at $5000. Why not give everybody a million dollars? Yes, people will have more dollars to spend but the dollars they have will be worth a lot less. We should have learned that from the Covid stimulus checks. That triggered the sky high inflation during the Biden years. The same thing will happen if Trump goes through with this. I can almost understand the first round of stimulus checks because the economy needed a jump start but the next two rounds were overkill. I didn't get excited about the Covid stimulus checks because I knew they wouldn't increase my buying power. Neither will this if they go through with it. Government handouts are just a way of making people feel better without doing a thing to improve their lives. The only way handing out $5000 to everyone makes sense would be if they offset it by cutting government spending in other areas and we know they aren't going to do that, no matter which party is in power.

I can't remember where I first heard it but it's a bad idea not matter what you call it. If the government hands out $5000 checks and doesn't offset it with cuts in other areas, it's going to be inflationary. If there is a windfall from the tariffs, I'd rather see it used to pay down the debt which would have a cooling effect on inflation and benefit the American people every bit as much as a handout. But since this is an election year, paying down the debt wouldn't make as big a splash as "free money". People don't understand that it's zero sum game. The more dollars the government puts into circulation, the less purchasing power those dollars will have.
