Lacking a chunk of asphalt's being kicked up and captured on film, or a body's flopping around wounded on the ground, the only evidence you're going to get is the fact that all five passengers in the limo moved their heads quickly -- and in different directions -- within half-a-second of each other between Z-140 and Z-150, that Ready, Bennett and Hickey all gyrated in different directions during the same timeframe, and that Rosemary Willis interrupted her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view Jackie and JFK up-close to turn her head farther to her right and in the direction of the TSBD in Z-141.

Oh yeah, and the fact that several people reported hearing a very early "backfire" or "firecracker."

Oh yeah, and that JBC heard a very early high-powered rifle shot.

Hint: that's why, after turning his head quickly to his left starting in Z-150, he turned it quickly back to his far right starting in Z-164 in a futile attempt to catch a glimpse of JFK over his right shoulder.


That's "D'oh ....... D'oh! ........ D'oh!," not "D'oh! ......... D'oh! D'oh!"

   You're being extremely loose with the term "very early" and then applying that to differing points in time. And a possible 10 frames is MORE than a 1/2 second. These are the lengths you are forced to go when pushing this Max Holland concoction.

As I've told you more than once before, forget Max Holland and his "Z-107" missing-everything shot.

The fact that all of the people I mentioned in my last post consciously and quickly reacted in a non-"startle"-like manner between Z-140 and Z-150 suggests that Oswalds fired his first, missing-everything, shot about a second earlier at "Z-124," i.e., half-a-second before Zapruder resumed filming (after a 17-second pause) at Z-133.

You're just trolling out of desperation, as usual.

ME: Describe the difference between a "startle" reaction to the sounds of an unexpected and nearby gunshot and the typical conscious/voluntary response to said sounds. Are they equally noticeable to an outside observer? Is it plausible that it would take someone 1.0 seconds to exhibit the latter? Provide sources.

Perplexity AI: A startle reaction is an immediate, brief, involuntary flinch — blink, shoulder hunch, or downward head dip — and may be subtle to an outside observer. The later conscious/voluntary reaction is usually more noticeable because it often involves turning the head horizontally to locate or assess the sound, rather than merely ducking. It is plausible that a person would take 1.0 seconds to show that conscious, voluntary head-turning response to an unexpected nearby gunshot. Although it does not prove that an unexpected nearby gunshot normally produces a one-second voluntary head turn, a peer-reviewed Vehicle System Dynamics article reports estimated mean reaction times of 0.7 seconds for expected events and 1.0 second for unexpected events in a driving/human-factors context. The startle reflex is a largely automatic, brainstem-mediated response to an abrupt, intense stimulus. In humans, its physical manifestations may include an eyeblink; contraction of facial, neck, and other skeletal muscles; flexion or withdrawal of the limbs; shoulder/trunk shrugging; head/neck movement; and autonomic changes such as increased heart rate or sweating. These elements are often broadly distributed rather than precisely directed toward determining the source of the sound. Startle is variable: it may be subtle, may consist only of a blink or brief neck-muscle activity, or may be a conspicuous defensive movement involving the head, shoulders, arms, or trunk.

In contrast, a conscious or voluntary reaction is a selected, goal-directed action. For example, a person may turn his head or body toward a sound to localize it, look toward an apparent threat, duck, seek cover, or begin another chosen response. Its form depends on what the person perceives, what response he selects, his posture and readiness, and the circumstances. It is therefore not accurate to assume that all voluntary reactions will be conspicuous or that they will always be more conspicuous than startle. A small, partial head turn may be less visible than a pronounced defensive startle; conversely, a blink or minor neck movement may be much less visible than a clear head or torso turn.

Peer-reviewed experiments distinguish these phenomena. In a study of human head rotations, Oude Nijhuis et al. found that a startling acoustic stimulus produced neck-muscle activity at about 60–64 milliseconds. In “startle-only” trials, observable head movements occurred in only 27 percent of trials; when present, those movements were small and began at a mean of approximately 166 milliseconds. In non-startle choice-reaction trials requiring a directionally selected head rotation, average head-movement onset was about 403 milliseconds. Thus, the study distinguishes rapid startle-linked muscle activity, sometimes accompanied by small head movement, from a later task-directed and directionally specified head turn.

Similarly, Siegmund, Inglis, and Sanderson studied prepared voluntary head flexion and rotation under startling and non-startling conditions. In relaxed startle-control trials, head-acceleration onset averaged approximately 58 milliseconds. In contrast, ordinary voluntary reaction-time head movements to a non-startling signal began later; in their head-rotation experiment, acceleration onset was approximately 129 milliseconds for the normal reaction-time tone and about 64 milliseconds when a startling stimulus was used. The researchers concluded that a startling sound can produce an early startle response while also accelerating a movement that was already prepared to be made. This study supports a distinction between reflexive startle activity and voluntary movement, but it does not model an unprepared bystander deciding how to respond to an actual gunshot.

The available research does not support a categorical assertion that a conscious or voluntary head turn normally begins one full second after a nearby unexpected gunshot. The principal head-rotation experiments involved instructed and, importantly, prepared laboratory movements; their movement onsets were substantially below one second. Nonetheless, a one-second interval is plausible for a more complex, unprepared perception-and-response sequence in which a person must register an unexpected event, interpret it, select a response, and then visibly execute that response. In a peer-reviewed vehicle human-factors study, Wanner et al. reported estimated mean reaction times of 0.7 seconds for expected events and 1.0 second for unexpected events. That finding is an analogy, not gunshot-specific evidence: it supports the proposition that an unexpected event can produce an approximately one-second mean response interval in a complex real-world task, but it does not establish a typical one-second latency for voluntary head turning after gunfire.

A gunfire-related law-enforcement simulation also shows why timing terminology must be precise. Kantor et al. reported that 20 of 22 officers exhibited visible startle reactions during an unexpected lethal-force scenario, including neck flexion and arm-shielding movements. The study reported a mean startle-response duration of 0.78 ± 0.41 seconds. That figure does not mean that startle began 0.78 seconds after the stimulus; it means that the visible startle movement, once initiated, lasted about that long on average. The same study reported an average firearm-draw time of 1.27 ± 0.47 seconds during the surprise-threat trial, compared with 0.91 ± 0.11 seconds in a control trial.

Accordingly, the most supportable conclusion is that a startle reaction and a voluntary reaction differ principally in timing, automaticity, and movement pattern. Startle is generally rapid, involuntary, defensive, and often broadly distributed across facial, neck, shoulder, arm, and trunk musculature. A voluntary reaction is selected and goal-directed, such as orienting toward the sound, looking at a perceived threat, or taking cover. Whether either reaction is more visible to an outside observer depends on its particular physical expression, the observer’s viewing angle, the subject’s posture, clothing, image quality, and the timing and framing of the recording. The research supports the plausibility of a one-second interval for some complex unanticipated responses, but does not establish one second as a typical or necessary delay before a voluntary head turn toward gunfire.

Makes sense.  Zapruder started filming because the loud 140 dB sound that he heard, but immediately forgot, prompted him to start filming.  The fact that he started filming there is proof of a shot half a second earlier.  Why didn't I think of that? It's so obvious.

    Yeah, if nobody had fired a single shot that day, Zapruder would have missed filming the entire motorcade.

You seem to be suggesting that Zapruder intended to start filming a second or two later than he did.

Why in the world would he do that?

He'd already paused filming for 17 seconds between Z-132 and Z-133, so he knew he had plenty of film left.

He resumed filming at Z-133 when he saw that the limo had straightened out and was coming towards him, not because he was "triggered" by Oswald's first shot half-a-second earlier -- which shot, blending in with the roar of four Harley-Davidson motorcycles, he possibly mistook for a firecracker or a backfire.
