. . .

Joe Biden Dons Unifier-In-Chief Role For First Primetime Address; Says Violence Against Asian-Americans “Must Stop”
https://deadline.com/2021/03/joe-biden-covid-speech-primetime-pandemic-relief-package-1234712826/

Quote from President’s Biden’s speech last night.

Quote
. . . vicious hate crimes against Asian Americans, who have been attacked, harassed, blamed, and scapegoated. At this very moment, so many of them — our fellow Americans — they’re on the frontlines of this pandemic, trying to save lives, and still — still — they are forced to live in fear of their lives just walking down streets in America. It’s wrong, it’s un-American, and it must stop.

Why didn’t Trump make a similar appeal? Why was he not helping, but hurting the situation, by calling COVID-19 the “China Virus”?

Quote
"Fourth, in the coming weeks, we will issue further guidance on what you can and cannot do once fully vaccinated to lessen the confusion, to keep people safe, and encourage more people to get vaccinated.”

A very sensible idea. Finding ways to encourage people to get vaccinated.

All in all, it’s good to have a President who sounds like a President. I have never such a positive impression of a President. Eighty percent of this is, no doubt, based on who he is following. In some ways a hard act to follow but in others an easy act to follow. But I do get the sense that President Biden is not just an adequate President but is one of the better ones. Does anyone else get that sense? We will find out more in the coming months.

I am 66 years old and I just got my first Moderna vaccine. I called my health provider and asked if I could get a vaccination. They said no. But four days later they sent an email saying I could get an appointment. So, ten days after my call I got vaccinated.

This might not be a coincidence. A problem they are having is all the people who make an appointment, but don’t show up. Every time they arrange 200 appointments, but only 170 show up, they have to scramble to find 30 extra people It takes extra work and gets the wrong people vaccinated, or risk having the shot wasted. It would make sense for a hospital, or the county, or whatever, to collect whatever data they can to find out who is gung-ho on getting the vaccination and who is hesitant. It is more efficient to get the gung-ho group vaccinated first and the hesitant group later.

I think that what some people are thinking, that if everyone else, or enough people get vaccinated, I can skate by without it. The problem is, there are always going to be too many others who think the same way. If one does this, they are setting themselves up for illness or death, just to avoid a little inconvenient and a little pain. And making others vulnerable to your selfishness.

If you are holding up on your vaccination, let them know you aren’t going. Do the minimum amount of harm. Make up your mind early and if you make an appointment, stick to it. Last minute changes of heart don’t just hurt you.

In any case, if your eligible for the vaccine, don’t just wait for the call. Give them a call. If this gets you vaccinated earlier, it will help you and help the hospital or clinic, to cut down on no shows which slows everything up as far as getting certain age groups vaccinated as soon as possible.

Ohio County Rejects Dominion Voting Systems After Trump Supporters Balk
March 11, 2021

https://www.npr.org/2021/03/11/975935129/ohio-county-rejects-dominion-voting-systems-after-trump-supporters-balk

The most important asset of a Company selling vote counting machines is its reputation. It appears that the reputation of Dominion Voting Systems has been severely damaged by the repeated lies of Donald Trump. I doubt the company can stay in business. I hope they can successfully sue Trump and recover all the future potential profits they would have earned. But Trump is very good at avoiding penalties. He has all sorts of options, like declaring bankruptcy. In any case, if down the road Dominion does recoup some of its losses, it won’t help all the employees who I anticipate will have to be let go.

EXPLAINER: Why countries are halting the AstraZeneca shot

https://apnews.com/article/why-countries-stopping-astrazeneca-vaccine-shot-explained-82f4c89a76c21f287e3041b52b7a69f0

Most European nations have stopped giving out the AstraZeneca vaccine. Why?

Because AstraZeneca announced there is a problem with their vaccine? No.
Because the European Medicines Agency announced there is a problem with their vaccine? No.
Because the World Health Organization announced there is a problem with their vaccine? No.

Because politicians have made this decision against the advice of the experts? Yes. Why?

Because a few people, about one in 500,000, developed blood clots shortly after receiving the vaccine. Older people are the ones who are mostly getting the vaccine. Older people are the ones who tend to develop blood clots, that can lead the strokes. But the number of people getting blood clots are no greater than the number expected. This is not my opinion but the opinion of the experts with the European Medicines Agency and the World Health Organization.

Only if the number of people with blood clots forming in the days after the vaccination significantly exceed the number expected, should stopping the vaccines be considered, and only if the number of expected deaths from not the vaccine exceeds the increase in number of people who get strokes. In any case, the decisions should be based on the opinion of experts, not politicians reacting to reports of people getting blood clots.

The European politicians are making the same mistake Trump made. Not following the advice of their medical experts. They need to remember that people, particularly older people, will develop blood clots, have strokes, have heart attacks, get cancer, regardless whether they receive a vaccine or not. Only if there is a surge of cases, and the medical experts have to be the ones who make this determination, should action be taken.

People’s lives will be lost because of the slowdown in the vaccination. A greater lose of lives may result in the increase of people being reluctant to take a vaccine, ever. These political decisions are made to order for the Anti-vaxxers. Even after the AstraZeneca vaccines are resumed, as I assume, they will be, they will use this episode to get people to distrust the AstraZeneca vaccine, and all the other vaccines. They will claim the governments discovered that the vaccines are harmful, but powerful interests forced the government into reversing their decisions. In Europe, as well as America, we need as many people as possible to get vaccinated. This panic by the politicians is not going to help that goal.

For ordinary people: get the vaccination when it is available to you. At the very least, if there is a significant chance you will bulk, don’t make an appointment. Instead, cancel your appointment. Don’t be a last minute no show. You will take away a vaccination from someone who needs it and want it, although, probably, someone less in need will get to take it. But it is important to decide to take the vaccine, don’t listen to internet advice from some anti-vaxxer, stay away from those sites, and go get your vaccine.

For politicians, don’t make decisions not based on the advice of the medical experts. Trump is not the only one guilty of this sin. In 2020, Europe and the better leaders for dealing with the pandemic. In 2021, I suspect it is America.
