It is important that all of the facts surrounding President Kennedy?s Assassination be made public in a way which will satisfy people in the United States and abroad that all the facts have been told and that a statement to this effect be made now.

The public must be satisfied that Oswald was the assassin; that he did not have confederates who are still at large; and that the evidence was such that he would have been convicted at trial.
Speculation about Oswald?s motivation ought to be cut off, and we should have some basis for rebutting thought that this was a Communist conspiracy or (as the Iron Curtain press is saying) a right?wing conspiracy to blame it on the Communists. Unfortunately the facts on Oswald seem about too pat ? too obvious (Marxist, Cuba, Russian wife, etc.). The Dallas police have put out statements on the Communist conspiracy theory, and it was they who were in charge when he was shot and thus silenced.
The matter has been handled thus far with neither dignity nor conviction. Facts have been mixed with rumour and speculation. We can scarcely let the world see us totally in the image of the Dallas police when our President is murdered.
I think this objective may be satisfied by making public as soon as possible a complete and thorough FBI report on Oswald and the assassination. This may run into the difficulty of pointing to inconsistencies between this report and statements by Dallas police officials. But the reputation of the Bureau is such that it may do the whole job.
The only other step would be the appointment of a Presidential Commission of unimpeachable personnel to review and examine the evidence and announce its conclusions. This has both advantages and disadvantages. It [sic] think it can await publication of the FBI report and public reaction to it here and abroad.
I think, however, that a statement that all the facts will be made public property in an orderly and responsible way should be made now. We need something to head off public speculation or Congressional hearings of the wrong sort.

IMO, yer a day late and a dollar short. Moyers acted simply as a go between, message taker, and stenographer.
Rostow had said, "I've got a *(unnamed) party here," discussion I am familiar with perceive it was just as likely
Rostow was describing just one person he had  been talking with before he made the phone call. This call was made less than four hours after Oswald died

Walter Pincus, George Lardner Jr.. The Washington Post . Washington, D.C.: Nov 14, 1993.

..."We were just scared to death that this was something bigger than just the act of a madman," recalled George Ball, the undersecretary then running the State Department in Dean Rusk's absence.

Neither Katzenbach, nor Ball, nor other top foreign policy and defense officials charged with maintaining domestic security and international stability believed the Soviet Union was behind the assassination of the president. The Soviets, they thought, simply had too much to lose from the repercussions of such an act, and were as mindful of the delicate balance of superpower relations as the Americans....

..Sunday, Nov. 24...

....The acting attorney general began calling friends and colleagues he hoped would share his belief that a blue-ribbon commission was needed. One call interrupted Katzenbach's friend, Yale Law School Dean Eugene Rostow, in the midst of a party at his house. Rostow called Ball to talk it over, and then called the White House to talk with Johnson aide Bill D. Moyers....

Of course, wikipedia minders purged these well supported details out of the Jack Ruby article,
almost eight years ago.:

Within four hours of Ruby's arrest on November 24, 1963, a telegram sent from La Jolla, CA, was received at the Dallas city jail in support of Jack Ruby, under the names of Hal and Pauline Collins.[11] That telegram supports the Warren Commission exhibit (CE 1510), which names Hal Collins, Jr.[12][13] as a character reference listed by Jack Ruby on a Texas liquor license application.[14] In 1957, Hal Collin's sister, Mary Ann Collins,[15][16] had married Robert L. Clark,[17][18] the brother of former U.S. Attorney General and the then sitting U.S. Supreme Court Justice, Tom C. Clark. Robert L. Clark was the former Dallas law partner of Maury Hughes.[19][20][21] Tom C. Clark advised newspaper columnist Drew Pearson in 1946 that the FBI had verified the claims[22][23] of James M. Ragen that Henry Crown and the Hilton Hotel chain controlled organized crime in Chicago.[24][25][26][27][28][29][30] Tom C. Clark selected Henry Crown's son, John as one of his two Supreme Court law clerks for the 1956 term,[31] and Tom Clark provided one of two recommendations to the Warren Commission to appoint Henry Crown's attorney, Albert E. Jenner, Jr.[32] as a senior assistant investigative counsel responsible for determining whether either Oswald or Ruby acted alone or conspired with others.[33]

...Warren then said that Albert Jenner of Chicago had been suggested. Warrem did not identify the source of the suggestion. ...Warren said that he had checked on Jenner with a number of people and they all recommended him.

Two of Jenner's references were mentioned by name. Tom Clark former Attorney General of the U.S. and active supporter in the Truman years of J. Edgar Hoover's anti subversion efforts, knew Jenner through their common participation on the Judiciary Committee of the American Bar Association. The other named supporter of Jenner was Dean Acheson, who had worked with Jenner on Acheson's committee on civil rights. Jenner came to the Commission then with recommendations from and past connections to one of the people involved in creating the Commission and someone who was at one time at least, close to Hoover.

Unfortunately, there is very little additional information on the selection of Counsel and organization of the Commission in the Executive Session transcripts....

Columnist Drew Pearson vacationed with Earl Warren. Warren daughter, Virginia was Conrad Hilton's escort for

Controversy
Although Drew Pearson and Earl Warren were close friends and vacationed together[44] and considering Pearson's stepson, Tyler Abell and his wife Bess were employed in the Lyndon Johnson White House[45], the reporting of Drew Pearson in October, 1963, was incompatible with the proposal by Earl Warren and the endorsement of Tom C. Clark of the appointment of Albert E. Jenner, Jr. to the Warren Commission staff.

In 1946, fearing for his life, Chicago organized crime leader James M. Ragen contacted Clark through newspaper columnist Drew Pearson to obtain the protection of federal agents in exchange for information. A dozen FBI agents were sent to Chicago to interrogate Ragen. After checking and confirming the details of mob activity provided by Ragen, Tom Clark withdrew Ragen's FBI protection for lack of federal jurisdiction to prosecute the suspects Ragen named. Almost immediately, Ragen was seriously wounded by gunfire. Several suspects were arrested but no one was prosecuted due to the disappearance of some witnesses and the lack of cooperation of others. Ragen's condition was improving after the shooting, but he died suddenly in the hospital of mercury poisoning. Drew Pearson hinted in his syndicated column in October 1963 that Clark had told him that the FBI confirmed Ragen's accusations of Chicago mob control by leading businessmen and politicians. This was confirmed in the posthumous publication, eleven years later, of Drew Pearson's Diaries, 1949?1959 edited by Tyler Abell.[46]; Tom Clark had told Pearson that Ragen stated that Henry Crown, the Hilton Hotels chain, and Walter Annenberg controlled the mob.[47][48][46][49][50][51][52][53][54]

Earl Warren and his family were close friends of Henry Crown's investment partner, Conrad Hilton, and Warren's daughter, Virginia was formerly involved in a close relationship with Conrad Hilton.[55][56][57][58] The year following the publication of the Warren Report, Earl Warren selected[59] as his Supreme Court law clerk, the son of Paul Ziffren,[60]former California state Democratic party chairman, forced to resign after allegations of Ziffren's organized crime connections were leveled by Earl Warren's friend,[61] Senator William F. Knowland.[62][63][64][65]

"One of the things that was embarrassing and got national coverage was the Reader's Digest article of July, 1960. It was written by Lester Velie and is called, "Paul Ziffren, The Democrats' Man of Mystery." (The author sets forth a very detailed account of "Ziffren 's connections with the underworld and gambling figures of the period,") "[66]

Despite the disturbing information about Henry Crown, et al., Drew Pearson claimed was provided to him by Clark in 1946, Justice Tom Clark appointed Crown's son, John, as one of two of his 1956 Supreme Court session law clerks.[67] In December 1963, Chief Justice Earl Warren, acting as head of the newly formed Presidential Commission investigating the death of President Kennedy, suggested that Henry Crown's attorney, Albert E. Jenner, Jr., who also, at that time employed Crown's son, John at Jenner's Chicago law firm, be appointed as a senior assistant Warren Commission counsel. Warren gave his fellow commissioners the names of two men who approved of Jenner's appointment, Tom C Clark and Dean Acheson. [68]

The appointment of Albert Jenner to investigate[69] whether either Oswald or Ruby acted alone or conspired with others remains controversial.[70][71] In 1953, Albert E. Jenner, Jr. had represented Michael Frank Darling when he was investigated by the House Committee on Education and Labor.[72]Darling was business manager of IBEW union Chicago local 1031, the first and largest union organization to contract insurance coverage with Allen Dorfman and his father, Paul, an associate of Jack Ruby. ?   THE ORDEAL OF LESTER CROWN - The New York Times
New York Times - Dec 7, 1986 "Meanwhile, seven officers and employees of Material Service were padding their expense accounts -at the direction of Crown, according to the Government report - and reimbursing their boss. The project was cut short when Material Service was subpoenaed by a Federal grand jury investigating corruption in the industry. The family turned to Albert E. Jenner Jr., a lawyer and longtime friend who is on the board of General Dynamics. Whenever the kids got into trouble, Jenner says, they never bothered the old man. They talked to me, and I got them out of trouble. In return for his cooperation with the grand jury, Lester Crown was granted immunity from prosecution."[6]

?
Jenner's most prominent client was Henry Crown, and U.S. Supreme Court Justice and former U.S. Attorney General, Tom C. Clark and Dean Acheson were the two men Earl Warren named as supporting the selection of Jenner as a Senior Assistant Investigative Counsel of the Warren Commission investigation.[7] Jenner was appointed and performed the "Area III" assignment, "Lee Harvey Oswald's Background."[1]

The appointment of Jenner to investigate whether Oswald, and by extension, also Oswald's murderer, Jack Ruby, acted alone or conspired with others remains controversial.[8][9]

It is commonly known that Albert E. Jenner, Jr., in the late 1960's, was the criminal defense attorney for Allen Dorfman[10], a close associate of longtime IBT President Jimmy Hoffa. Dorfman was convicted on several felony counts, and was violently murdered in 1983.

However, in 1953 Congressional Committee Hearings on Labor Racketeering, Jenner also represented Chicago Electrical Workers Local 1031 business manager, M. Frank Darling[11], while he was under investigation for paying the inexperienced, newly opened insurance brokerage owned by Allen Dorfman, his father Paul Dorfman, and his mother Rose, millions of dollars of funds paid to Local 1031 by employers per union contract agreements, in exchange for health insurance coverage of Local 1031's union members. Stanford Clinton was counsel for the Dorfmans.[12] Jenner explained to the Committee and its counsel that Mr. Darling did not understand the concept of a retention rate related to excess health insurance premiums paid to the Dorfmans.[13][14] During that same hearing, Jimmy Hoffa challenged Jenner's client, Darling's claim of inability to understand retention percentage. Darling had permitted the Dorfmans a 100 percent retention of excess premiums paid, while the Committee was critical of Jimmy Hoffa allowing the Dorfmans to retain just 17-1/2 percent of excess Teamsters Union paid premiums.[15]

Minutes of a 1982 State of New Jersey Casino Control Commission hearing (From page 471)[16] related to an application by a Pritzker family affiliated business, to obtain a hotel-casino license, revealed that Stanford Clinton was, for a long period, attorney for the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund. Also disclosed was that Clinton was a law partner of the Pritzker family law firm, that Jimmy Hoffa praised Stanford Clinton's legal work, and that, to avoid conflict of interests when the Pritzker family applied for hotel development loans from the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund, Jenner's law firm, Thompson, Raymond, Mayer, Jenner was representing the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund when the Pritzker family requested loans from that Teamsters Pension Fund.(From page 471)[17]

Although the FBI questioned Paul Dorfman and confirmed Dorfman's association with Jack Ruby, (see Warren Commission exhibit CE 1279)[18] there is nothing in the Warren Commission Report about Jenner's legal representation of Dorfman insurance brokerage client, M. Frank Darling, or about Jenner's law firm's cooperation with Stanford Clinton in representing the Teamsters Central States Pension Fund, linked in the above cited, 1982 New Jersey report, to Allen Dorfman.

Despite the disturbing information about Henry Crown, et al., Drew Pearson claimed was provided to him by Clark in 1946, Justice Tom Clark appointed Crown's son, John, as one of two of his 1956 Supreme Court session law clerks.[28] In December 1963, when Chief Justice Earl Warren, acting as head of the newly formed Presidential Commission investigating the death of President Kennedy, suggested the appointment to the Warren Commission of Henry Crown's attorney, Albert E. Jenner, Jr., at that time, Jenner's law firm employed Crown's son, John Crown, as a law associate, and later as a law partner.

Henry Crown and his close friend, Sam Nanini, were reported in March 1977 to have had relationships with organized crime.[29][30]

As Attorney General, Tom Clark was accused of impropriety in the early parole of convicted Chicago crime boss, Louis Campagna and three others.[31] Sam Nanini wrote a letter in 1947 to the federal bureau of prisons advocating parole for Campagna. [32][33]

In 2008 I noticed that JFK rented in late 1960 the 400 acre estate of Ernie Byfield, Jr's mother as the
weekend White House, until mid 1963. Pat Hoy was promoted to president of Chicago Sherman Hotel group
until Ernie Byfield Jr decided to sell that businsess, circa 1960. Byfield refurbished and reopened the Lincoln
Park Hotel and Restaurant partnered with Pat Hoy's nephew.

Chicago Sun Times columnist Irv Kupcinet and his wife were fixtures in booth one in the Pump Room restaurant
in the Sherman Hotel group Ambassador West Hotel for fifty years!

Note the proximity of the dates in the following two document images.:
https://www.maryferrell.org/showDoc.html?docId=143309#relPageId=2

The point of all of the above is that a determined U.S. Attorney General at war against organized crime would not permit his brother, the president, to lease an estate from Byfield, Jr. and his mother, and would have launched an investigation of McNamara's awarding of the TFX fighter airplane contract to a defense contractor controlled by Henry Crown with sitting corp. V.P. Patrick Hoy. Those things just wouldn't happen if RFK was having such an offensive impact on organized crime that the events described in Douglas's article could be reliable. RFK's #3, Howard Willens could have simply made a phone call to his mother, requesting that she tell her next door neighbor, Clarice Accardo, to tell her husband, Tony, to order his associates to keep RFK's wife and kids off limits to mob violence.

Pat Hoy was mob liason between Sidney Korshak and Henry Crown and his partner Conrad Hilton.

The following article continued my interest in JFK Assassination research. After reading it and researching the
history of Henry Crown and his 1961 take under of General Dynamics, I was hooked.
It did not lessen my interest when I found that Lester Crown's wife Renee Schine was the sister of Roy Cohn's
fairhaired boy, G David Schine, and that the parents of the Schines and of Ruby roomie George Senator all four
rest in the same small Jewish congregation of just 499 souls in Gloversville, NY.

MR. OBAMA'S NEIGHBORHOOD
Jews who have known Obama for years talk about their representative and neighbor.
BY JPOST.COM   FEBRUARY 15, 2010
To pray at the KAM Isaiah Israel synagogue, a striking tan brick building of Byzantine inspiration, one must first contend with the cops. They are stationed at either end of the two streets that abut the domed building, and they require a photo ID and a purpose to pass the metal barricades and cement dividers. In certain cities, the officers would be there to guard such a conspicuous site of Jewish worship from its gentile neighbors. In the Chicago neighborhood of Hyde Park, it is just the opposite. For across the street, behind its own layer of police protection, another brick building stands. This one is deep crimson, with a white colonnaded porch and pink impatiens along the walk. Its more conventional style belies most atypical residents: what might be the next first family of the United States. The journey that has taken Barack Obama from Chicago to Washington, one that might lead from a red brick house to the White House, began in this integrated, eclectic neighborhood where he was close to Jews physically, professionally and politically. Along this journey, Obama has encountered other Jews, people who don't know him personally and who repeatedly ask: Who is this guy? The Jews of Chicago say: We have the answer. Many who have employed him and fund-raised for him and voted for him are now trying to reassure those wary Jewish voters. In doing so, they tell of someone who has at times been more welcome in progressive Jewish circles than in the black community, circles where he built lasting friendships and a political foundation that have helped propel him onto the national stage. Along the way, many of the liberal positions they once praised him for - or projected onto him - have been discarded, those on Israel included. That has left some dissatisfied and several dubious, but many excited at the thought that they might have to help their neighbor pack his bags come November 5. TO TRACE the story of Obama's Chicago Jewish political connections, one needs to start in Boston. The story, as long-time acquaintance and major Jewish philanthropist Lester Crown tells it, goes something like this: After graduating from Columbia University and working in Chicago as a community organizer in his early 20s, Obama left this Midwest metropolis to attend Harvard Law School. One day back in Chicago, Crown's good friend Newton Minow received a phone call from his daughter Martha, a Harvard law professor, telling him, "You ought to interview the smartest young man I've ever had in any of my classes." According to lore, when Minow called a partner in his firm to recommend he meet with Obama during a visit to Harvard, the partner told him he had already been hired for a summer internship. Obama's experience at the Sidley Austin firm, where he soon got to know Minow, a former Federal Communications Commission chairman (as well as his future wife, Michelle Robinson), was crucial in introducing Obama to leading local Jewish figures like the billionaire Crown. Crown first became acquainted with the young associate after Minow suggested he meet this "special" guy who "is going places." And indeed, Crown describes him as "brilliant" and "a quick study," though he does not pretend to have pictured Obama sitting in the Oval Office during their early encounters. These kinds of introductions proved key for Obama's construction of a network which would eventually support his political aspirations. The Crown family, for instance, have been major financial backers, with Lester's son James serving as Obama's Illinois finance chairman. "He's developed very close relations with the Jewish community in Chicago. If you look at fund-raising, etc., the people who primarily support him are Jewish," says Crown. For starters, above his son in the fund-raising structure is Penny Pritzker, another local Jewish billionaire and the national campaign finance chairwoman. And along with Martha and Newton Minow, another of his earliest and most important mentors was former Chicago congressman and federal judge Abner Mikva, who ended up providing key political backing. Obama turned down both Mikva's offer of a clerkship and Minow's offer of a slot at Sidley Austin, however, to take a full-time job with a different kind of Jew and a different kind of lawyer. Traveling from the soaring skyscraper of Crown's General Dynamics office, with its panoramic city views, heavy furniture and carpeted hallways, to Judson Miner's perch in a cozy historic town house, complete with exposed brick walls and a cluttered fireplace mantel displaying a picture of himself with Obama, is to cross a different world. As opposed to political heavyweights and establishment types, Miner is scruffy, progressive, a religious skeptic. Miner, in fact, made a bid to recruit Obama when he read in the Chicago media that the first African American president of the Harvard Law Review wanted to work in civil rights but was bound for what Miner termed the "silk stocking firm" of Sidley Austin. In turned out that was inaccurate, as was the press report that he had worked his way out of the Chicago ghetto to get to Harvard. (In fact, Obama was born in Hawaii and raised by his white mother and her family after his Kenyan father returned to Africa. He didn't come to Chicago until after college, and his lack of black bona fides would be a major obstacle when he later ran for the Illinois senate.) Miner was a leading Chicago civil rights lawyer, one whom it turned out Obama had heard of because of the time Miner had spent as the corporation counsel for the city. Miner didn't know that when he called the Harvard Law Review trying to recruit the star student. He was told to take a number - in the high hundreds. But to Miner's surprise, Obama tracked him down at home and after a series of conversations ended up taking a job at Miner's firm. He recalls Obama as "strikingly comfortable with who he was," someone who didn't feel the need to trumpet accomplishments such as heading the law review. "What was particularly impressive about Barack was that for a person with his credentials, he was happy to be an associate and do basic research and not take the lead." He stayed at the firm even after he won his state senate seat in 1996, though it greatly limited his hours there. His work for Miner, a well-respected name in civil rights circles, connected him to more Jewish progressives, who also corresponded to those he met in his neighborhood. "There was a natural contact - not because they were sought out," Miner explains. "A lot of them live in Hyde Park. A lot of them are involved in progressive legal activity. So they were the people he'd meet." TO CATER to an expanding population, KAM Isaiah Israel opened the doors of its Hyde Park synagogue in 1924, as the neighborhood was soon to experience its Jewish population peak of upwards of 20,000. Many of the congregants were attracted there for the same reasons - a green, lakefront district close to downtown - that the neighborhood had originally been established as a summer retreat for the wealthy in the mid-1800s. Once public transportation cut the travel time and cost to the city - today a mere 15 minutes - middle-class Jewish merchants swarmed in. Many Jews were also pulled to the neighborhood by the prestigious University of Chicago, which opened shop along with the train in 1892 and created an intellectual, liberal enclave. To this day, many people who come to study end up staying. And many professors, such as Obama, make their homes nearby. The tenor of the neighborhood changed following World War II, as it did in many major American cities, when suburban expansion and new wealth drew middle-class residents - Jews included - to the suburbs as the poorer black population further south moved in. With sinking property values and increasing crime, by 1960 the University of Chicago weighed relocation. Other communities' Jewish residents were pouring out, though many often retained the leases of the property they left behind. "That was the death knell of any kind of Jewish-black relations because the Jews were seen as the landlords and the owners of small businesses," remarks Emily Soloff, who has worked with the black community in her capacity at the American Jewish Committee's Chicago office. "Hyde Park is the exception to this because Hyde Park is a more integrated community, in part because the University of Chicago has really held the line, because the University of Chicago decided to stay, buy more land and provide security." The move helped anchor the white progressive community to the neighborhood alongside the black middle and upper-middle class. And, according to Chuck Bernstein of the Chicago Jewish Historical Society, two liberal rabbis at the time also urged their members to stay put. "They made a very strong stand against white flight, which was not the same in many other communities," he noted. As a result, he said, "It's an integrated community - one of the few successfully integrated communities in America." And that in turn bred a more liberal population. KAM Isaiah Israel rabbi Arnold Jacob Wolf first came to Hyde Park to attend university in 1940 and returned for good in 1980. The white-bearded and avuncular Wolf recently retired but still has an office at the synagogue, filled with holy texts and family photos. He describes the Jews who chose to stay in the neighborhood as "very proudly Jewish, but in a universalist mode - interfaith, left, liberal, integrationist. The others moved away, to the suburbs." Proudly Jewish - and proudly political. Many, including Wolf himself, would fund-raise and canvas for Obama. In fact, the first time Wolf saw him was at an informal fund-raiser he had agreed to hold for the rising star then running for state senate. He thinks it was held in his own home - at 84, he quips, "nothing is definite" - but is sure of what he told him when they met. "I said to him, 'Mr. Obama, someday you will be vice president of the United States.' And he said, 'Why vice president?' and laughed." Continued from my last post:

I find that Irv Kupcinet is at the center of the chain of relationships and acquaintances of many of the people I have researched related to the background of Jack Ruby and to Albert E. Jenner, Jr. As a result, I suspect that he has not received the attention of assassination researchers I would expect someone in his unique position, awareness, and contacts would have received if Penn Jones had not linked the sudden, late November, 1963 death of Kupcinet's daughter, Karyn, with an anonymous, prescient call to a California telephone operator, minutes before JFK was assassinated.

Reading this piece escalated my suspicion that Kupcinet had another agenda having nothing to do with Jones's unsupported claim that Karyn Kupcinet was that anonymous caller who tried to warn that the president was about to be killed.

Kup vs. JFK
Chronicle of a Columnist's Obsession

By Jim Kielty
Year In Review archives ?

In an essay on the Oliver Stone film JFK, published a month after his laudatory review in the Sun-Times, Roger Ebert wrote: "Never in my years as a newspaperman have I seen one subject pummeled so mercilessly and joylessly as this movie that questions the official wisdom on the assassination of John F. Kennedy."

Ebert didn't have to look far to find the chief Chicago-area pummeler: his Sun-Times colleague Irv Kupcinet has repeatedly used his column to flail JFK, Oliver Stone, and anyone else who has dared to challenge the findings of the Warren Commission report.

Between December 17 of last year, when he first reviewed JFK as the lead item in his column, and May 22 of this year, when the Sun-Times reviewed the home video version (and I stopped counting), Kup ran more than two dozen items on Stone, his film, and other Kennedy assassination subjects. He also called for the opening of sealed government files on the assassination, venturing that the information contained therein will put an end to "far-fetched conspiracy theories," by which he seems to mean anything other than the Warren Commission report.

Let's run the highlights:

December 17, 1991: Kup says JFK may be "the most controversial movie of our day." He reports that Oliver Stone "has come under severe criticism for twisting the story to fit his own theory." He faults Stone for making former New Orleans district attorney Jim Garrison the hero of the movie and for claiming the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr. were all linked in some conspiracy. "Stone's movie probably will be a box office hit," Kup predicts, "but in reaching a huge audience he owes history some relevance to the truth."

December 19: Kup mentions another assassination film set for release, Ruby, calling it a "powerful role" for star Danny Aiello.

December 22: Kup's Sunday column carries a photo of the now-aged Governor John Connally of Texas with a caption promoting his planned appearance the next day on CBS This Morning, where, Kup says, Connally will "give his opinion of the movie JFK."

December 23: "The new movie JFK was trashed on David Brinkley's ABC Sunday show," Kup reports. "The various theories of a conspiracy in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in the Oliver Stone production were ridiculed by the panelists, as we previously did."

December 24: Kup criticizes the syndicated Geraldo show telecast in Chicago on Channel Nine the day before. The guests on the show, including the supposed mistress of President Lyndon B. Johnson, claimed that LBJ was the "prime mover in the assassination." Calling the show's theme "the nadir of speculation," Kup asks, "wouldn't Bobby Kennedy, then attorney general . . . have exposed such a plot?"

December 25: On his Christmas wish list for assorted celebrities Kup suggests the following: "Oliver Stone--another theory for his collection of astounding assumptions on the assassination of JFK: the butler did it."

Kup then took a vacation and resumed his column on Sunday, January 5. It took him a week to return to the topic of JFK.

January 12: Kup reports that Oliver Stone is coming to Chicago to tape an Oprah Winfrey show. "I trust Oprah will press him on all the criticism of his convoluted conspiracy theory for the assassination."

January 19: In his lead item this Sunday Kup again plays the Bobby card: "The major flaw in all the theories about the JFK assassination, especially those cited in the movie JFK, is failure to mention Bobby Kennedy, then U.S. attorney general with tremendous resources at his demand. Can anybody believe that Bobby, a tenacious prosecutor, wouldn't have taken action to pursue every conspiracy theory to determine if some person(s) other than Lee Harvey Oswald had killed his beloved brother? Doesn't make sense."

January 23: Kup reports that former House speaker Tip O'Neill "became infuriated" during an interview with radio personality Eddie Schwartz when asked about LBJ's alleged involvement in the assassination. "Meanwhile," Kup adds, "the pressure to open all the records, including Warren Commission documents, is gaining momentum. That would help clarify the confusion now rampant."

January 26: Again Kup leads his Sunday column with the assassination: the nation is "going ballistic" over it, he says. Comparing the current hysteria to public reactions to the deaths of Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield, and William McKinley, Kup quotes Chicago historian Ralph Newman, who explains that the nation "refuses to accept the logical explanation for the sudden death of a hero."

February 5: Kup plugs Oliver Stone's appearance on Dan Rather's CBS show 48 Hours, which he seems to have previewed. He identifies Rather as a "severe critic" of the film and adds: "One more time: Stone makes one admission in the interview. He did make up some points in the movie. In doing so, he exercised his legitimate license as an artist to tell a story. But Stone insists that did not alter the movie's conclusion that there was a conspiracy to kill JFK."

February 6: A Chicago alderman has asked Mayor Daley to have the Police Department release its files on Jack Ruby, to determine if Ruby had any connection with the assassination. "That, Your Honor, will be a waste of time and money," Kup advises.

Kup goes on in a second paragraph of this column to quote his old pal Elmer Gertz, who worked as an attorney for Jack Ruby and considers any effort to link him to a conspiracy "sheer madness." According to Gertz, Kup reports, Ruby's shooting of Oswald was a "moment of madness . . . by a self-anointed avenger, anothing more." Kup concludes with a quick slap at Geraldo Rivera: "The search of the Ruby files will be as fruitful as Geraldo Rivera's opening of Al Capone's vault."

February 14: Kup notes that Kevin Costner, who plays Jim Garrison in JFK, portrayed a character in an earlier film, Bull Durham, who "believes in the soul, hard liquor and that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone." Kup asks: "Cinema verite?" The column is illustrated by a stock shot of Costner dressed as Eliot Ness in The Untouchables. The caption reads: "Inconsistencies in 'character.'"

February 28: Kup plugs an appearance by former president Gerald Ford, the lone surviving member of the Warren Commission, on the A&E cable show Investigative Reports. Kup says the former president "minces no words in describing the conspiracy theory in the movie 'JFK.' He calls it 'hogwash.' Adds Ford, 'Not one credible piece of evidence has surfaced to convince me that Lee Harvey Oswald wasn't the lone assassin.'"

March 15: The lead item in Kup's Sunday column reports on an upcoming appearance in Chicago by Oliver Stone, who is to receive an award as "Director of the Decade" from the Chicago International Film Festival. Kup adds that Stone will join a "panel of authorities" on the JFK assassination.

March 29: One day before the Oscars, Kup allows as how JFK, which is up for a slew of awards, "helped get Congress to pass legislation that would open the files on the assassination." But he adds that "the movie had a lot of help," pointing out that Warner Bros., producers of the film, retained Hill & Knowlton's Frank Mankiewicz, former press secretary to Robert F. Kennedy, "to lobby Congress to take such action."

March 30: Kup takes a pre-Oscar shot at JFK's director: "If Oliver Stone doesn't win an award," he asks, "will he charge conspiracy?"

April 1: Kup's Oscar wrap-up says: "Worst Loser--Oliver Stone, whose 'JFK' failed to score except for two technical awards, was victim of a conspiracy, no doubt. Stone was quoted as blaming the media and gays for denouncing the film."

April 3: Kup reports that Motion Picture Association president Jack Valenti, a former aide to LBJ, "denounced 'JFK' as a 'hoax, a smear and pure fiction.'" Kup explains that Valenti waited until after the Academy Awards to denounce the film so as not to influence the voting. "He was especially upset," Kup claims, "because of his loyalty to his former boss . . . who was implicated in the movie as part of a conspiracy to kill JFK."

In the same column, Kup sneaks in another plug for old friend Elmer Gertz. "'Who Shot JFK?' will be Elmer Gertz's topic at Congregation Kol Ami tonight," Kup reports, adding, "Gertz wrote the definitive biography of Jack Ruby."

April 7: Kup again comes to the defense of the Warren Commission, writing, "Dr. Charles Crenshaw, who waited 29 years to 'reveal' that President JFK was shot by 'bullets in front of his head' as described in his book, JFK: Conspiracy of Silence, hereby is awarded the procrastinator medal."

April 15: Kup notes "overwhelming support" to have the government open the files on the assassination of President Kennedy. "But don't expect to see the files shortly," he cautions. "The House appointed a five-member board to review and release all the documents--but it has two years to complete its work."

April 22: Kup again mentions that Oliver Stone is being honored by the Chicago International Film Festival and that Stone "also will join a pre-dinner panel on the JFK assassination."

April 30: Kup criticizes the Justice Department's "surprising opposition to releasing" the Kennedy assassination files, writing that this plays "into the hands of those who insist there was a conspiracy." He then reports that U.S. Representative Henry Hyde wrote to Attorney General William Barr to ask why the government opposed disclosure of the files. Hyde's letter, according to Kup, claims the government's refusal "is supporting the paranoia of Oliver Stone and his conspiracy comrades."

May 21: After three weeks of silence on the issue, Kup notes an article in the Journal of the American Medical Association by the two pathologists who performed the autopsy on the body of President Kennedy. They claim that the bullets that killed the president came from the rear "and confirm the Warren Commission report. That should cause the government to speed up its release of the official reports on the assassination," Kup continues, "and put an end to all those far-fetched conspiracy theories." Kup ends the item by stating: "Some doubters, nevertheless, will continue to hold conspiracy theories, largely because of the movie 'JFK.'"

May 22: Kup reports on Oliver Stone's reaction to the JAMA report, quoting Hollywood columnist Army Archerd as saying that Stone took a "so what?" position. Nevertheless, Kup insists that the claim of the two pathologists "deflates Stone's conspiracy theory that another person was involved." Coincidentally, the home video version of JFK is reviewed in the Sun-Times on this day. The thumbnail critique quotes Roger Ebert's original review, which says the film "convincingly argues the official version of JFK's death is flatly impossible."

What did Kup have against JFK? I asked him recently, and he replied that he thought Stone "went overboard" in tying government agencies to the assassination. He said Jim Garrison, the prosecutor played in the film by Kevin Costner, was "held in low esteem" in New Orleans for his prosecution of Clay Shaw as part of the assassination conspiracy. He felt that if Stone's film went unchallenged, it could give "the wrong impression to young viewers" whose only knowledge of the assassination might come from the film.

But perhaps there's a more personal dimension to Kup's animus. A hint of it surfaces in his column of February 9, which I've held aside from the foregoing chronology. In this Sunday column Kup writes, "The NBC 'Today' show on Friday carried a list of people who died violently in 1963 shortly after the death of President John F. Kennedy and may have had some link to the assassination. The first name on the list was Karyn Kupcinet, my daughter."

Calling the inclusion of his daughter "an atrocious outrage," Kup goes on to acknowledge that his daughter died violently in a still unsolved Hollywood murder and that the list including her name was published in a book several years earlier. He denies his daughter had any knowledge of the assassination and says that for the Today show "to repeat the calumny is reprehensible." He concludes by asking the show to "rectify the error."

What exactly had the Today show done? The week of February 3 through 7, Today carried a five-part series entitled "Who Killed JFK?" The last segment included an interview with Oliver Stone conducted by Bryant Gumbel. Immediately after the Stone interview and concluding the five-part series, Gumbel said: "As if JFK's murder weren't enough, consider this: in the first 13 years following the assassination, 37 people with some relation to the case died violently. The odds against that, actuaries say, are higher than 1 in 10,000. We thought showing you who they were, along with how they died, would make an intriguing footnote to our series. They add further mystery to one of the great puzzles of our time." The first name on the list was that of Karyn Kupcinet, preceded by the description, "Murdered--November, 1963."

The book Kup referred to in his February 9 column is Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy, by Jim Marrs. It describes Karyn Kupcinet as a "TV host's daughter who was overheard telling of JFK's death prior to 11/22/63." A similar "mysterious deaths list" was carried in another book on the assassination, High Treason: The Assassination of President John F. Kennedy and the New Evidence of Conspiracy by Robert Groden and Harrison Livingstone. These authors refer to Karyn as a "daughter of a childhood friend of Ruby. . . . She was murdered two days after Kennedy. She had foreknowledge of the assassination and was overheard by a telephone operator talking about it." (In his autobiography Kup says he knew Ruby "when he was a one-time organizer for the Waste and Material Handlers Union.")

Asked if there might be some connection, conscious or otherwise, between his attitude toward assassination conspiracy theories and the fact that his daughter's name has been dragged into them, Kup said the insinuations about his daughter are as outlandish as the theories. He said there is no connection whatsoever.

ON ECONOMICS: -- How Kennedy Assassination Affected Some Stock Prices
JONATHAN MARSHALL

....But the facts speak tellingly about how accidents of history can affect great fortunes.
A postscript for assassination buffs: No individual stood to lose more from the TFX scandal than Chicago investor Henry Crown, who owned 20 percent of General Dynamics. His personal attorney, Albert Jenner, became a senior staff attorney on the Warren Commission, in charge of investigating the possibility of a conspiracy. In later years, Jenner also represented Chicago labor racketeer Allen Dorfman. Dorfman's stepfather Paul, a leading figure in the Chicago mob, ran the Waste Handlers Union in Chicago in 1939 with Jack Ruby, Lee Harvey Oswald's future killer.
Both Dorfmans hated the Kennedy family. Robert Kennedy had hauled them before a Senate crime panel in the late 1950s, where they took the Fifth Amendment.
Allen Dorfman was murdered, gangland-style, in 1983 in the company of another friend of Ruby, Irwin Weiner. Attorney Jenner obtained Weiner's acquittal in a 1975 federal labor racketeering case after the government's leading witness was shotgunned to death.
Weiner was called to testify in 1978 before the House Select Committee on Assassinations about his relationship with Ruby, including a phone conversation with Ruby shortly before the assassination. He said the call was innocent.
The committee was investigating the theory -- which it never proved -- that organized crime had Ruby silence Oswald to disguise its own role in the Kennedy assassination.....

At the same time Oswald was getting buried in Fort Worth Tx, he was also getting buried in Washington DC.....

"Rumor and speculation"..."The facts seems too pat-too obvious" [really?]..... barely one day after Oswald was killed.

Wasn't Bill Moyers called in immediately after the shooting? As I recall all air traffic in and out of Love Field was halted  immediately after the murder of President Kennedy...BUT LBJ personally authorized the plane carrying Bill Moyers from Houston to land at Love.

I noticed this in the article that you linked to.....

We now know about the once-secret 1960s Operation Mockingbird program and a 1967 CIA directive to smear government critics as "conspiracy theorists." CIA Dispatch 1035-960 instructed agents to contact their media contacts and urge them to disparage those who criticize the Warren Commission findings. The 150-page CIA document is here in the original, and here in reformatted text of its summary.

Even in media circles or popular discussions today about civic affairs, many people respond to new information by stating they are not interested in criticism of government on sensitive matters because it might be considered "conspiracy theory." Few repeating such adages seem to know that a secret government plan in 1967 popularized those words to immunize government in effect from any suspicions of gross misconduct in major events.

The smearing of us critics continues to this very day....  I'm convinced that there are agents who are paid with our tax dollars posting right here in this forum...Their mission is ..quote.."to disparage those who criticize the Warren Commission findings."
