In March 1967, Bertrand Russell's secretary, Ralph Schoenman (Joan Mellen's ex-husband), sent Jim Garrison a copy of an anti-Clay Shaw / anti-CIA article that had been published in a Communist-owned Italian newspaper (Paese Sera) three days after Garrison had arrested Shaw on suspicion of masterminding a "homosexual thrill-kill" assassination of JFK.

The article motivated Garrison to change his theory against Shaw to “He organized it for the CIA!”

Garrison lost his case against Shaw in 1969, but twenty-two years later, Oliver Stone based his self-described mythological (“to counter the myth of the Warren Report”) film, “JFK,” on Jim Marrs' 1989 book, Crossfire and on Garrison’s 1988 book, On the Trail of the Assassins, a copy of which had been given to Stone by its far-left publisher, Ellen Ray, at a film festival in Cuba.

Garrison said in On the Trail of the Assassins that he wasn't aware of the Paese Sera article until after the trial.

LOL!

Gag me with a KGB spoon.

Garrison and Nicholas Lemann kept the following from Joan Mellen and then editor of the Garrison book you describe in your post, Zachary Sklar.
Sklar was also the coauthor of the screenplay, "JFK, the Movie" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In the course of attempting to determine if my new fact checked research details were actually original, I found identical details, by author of a biography of Clay Shaw, Donald H Carpenter.

(Gen. Phil Strong, USMC, just happened to be CIA science officer who initiated the U2 Spy plane project.)

Strong's prep school roommate, Walker Spencer, in Pottstown, PA, a Princetown U. feeder school, can be linked through that roommate to the busybody, Bouhe, in Dallas
whose sister in Plainfield, NJ who invited him to spend his last days there. Her husband's Princeton roommate was a member of "Squirrel's" 1928
touring musical production. Squirrel Ashcraft just happened to be CIA chief of domestic contacts in 1963.
So, the Dallas busybody's Georg Bouhe's sister's husband, a Mr. Tilbury Freeman, attended the same Princeton annual reunion that Squirrel attended, well into the 1980s.....

...Edwin "Squirrel" Ashcraft was an authority on 20th century Jazz History. He certainly knew who George Lewis was. Tom Bethel authored the definitive biographer of George Lewis and quite likely was acquainted with Squirrel Ashcraft.

Squirrel also happened to be the boss of William Burke and Lloyd Ray who succeeded Burke as head of the NOLA office of CIA domestic contacts because Squirrel Ashcraft headed that CIA department.

Squirrel's Princeton class of 1929 classmate was "Buck" Freeman of Plainfield, NJ. His name came to my attention because it appears as a sponsor on George Bouhe's application for U.S. citizenship. George Bouhe died in Plainfield, NJ, the city of residence of his sister, Freeman's wife. Buck Freeman certainly knew Squirrel Ashcraft, as his roommate, Bert Seay was a Triangle Players member at Princeton and Buck Freeman attended the class reunions....

Upon graduation he went to the National Acceptance Bank of New York, which later merged with the Bank of Manhattan. In 1942 he went to Hamilton Standard Propellers in Hartford. After participating in various business enterprises, he sold his interest in a booming firm and started traveling. His hobby continued to be music, and he served as president of the Plainfield Mendelssohn Glee Club, and was a soloist both there and in the Grace Episcopal Choir. In 1934 e married Irena Alexandrovna Bouche, and she survives, together with a son, Tilbury O. Jr. Buck's brother Herbert C. '38 is deceased, The Class extends its sympathy to Buck's family.

A question for the moderator(s):

Are we permitted to make insane asylum-based jokes here?

I did not write this, the insane (your wording) grandson of Phil Strong wrote it. It was spring, 1937, USMC Reserve
Captain Philip G Strong was beginning a two year walking tour of  Germany and Russia. His guide in Berlin was
future Time magazine editor in chief, Otto Fuerbringer....

I Never Knew My Grandfather, Only What He Pretended to Be
Toby Barlow
Fri Aug 9, 2013 11:15am Post a comment  Favorite This
Toby Barlow?s Babayaga is out this week from Farrar, Straus and Giroux, and follows the travels of a CIA agent posing as an ad executive CIA agent in Europe in the 1950s. What begins as a relatively straightforward operation quickly becomes something bigger, and weirder. Read an excerpt from the novel and see for yourself.

What you might not know are the life events that inspired Barlow?s story. Read on as the author tells us a tale about his grandfather, waiting on a German train in 1937?.

My grandfather sits on a train, waiting. It is early spring, 1937. His name is Philip Strong and he has boarded here in the Hamburg station, preparing to head to Berlin. Although I possess a volume of his letters from this trip, letters I have read many times, I am still not exactly sure why he is here.

He is 36 years old, a U.S. Marine Reserve Captain. But as a reserve officer, he is not travelling in uniform, instead he?s wearing an old tweed jacket. He has a bulky backpack stashed on the overhead rack. In his pocket is tucked his smoking pipe along with a small pouch of his treasured Dunhill tobacco.

Beside him sits a much younger man named Leko. They are on this sightseeing trip together. By all appearances, it is nothing more than that. They stay in youth hostels and ride on many trains such as this one, sitting back in the third class smokers.

It doesn?t make actually make sense that my grandfather would be here in any official capacity. He does not speak German or Russian, only a little French and only the most rudimentary Spanish. If the army had wanted someone to observe the European situation, they probably would have sent an agent who understood at least one of the various languages.

But it also seems too odd for him to be embarking on a journey with an itinerary that will take him through such a large number of the looming conflicts? many theaters. He will travel from Germany on to Poland, the Balkans, Russia, then down to Kabul and Tehran, driving from there over to Baghdad and Beruit before shipping off to the already jittery East.

Also, there?s the fact that he doesn?t know this young man sitting beside him very well at all. ?Leko and I are getting on well together ? we have likes in common with are being mutually discovered and so far have developed none which grate on each other,? he writes to his sister. It seems they are only socially connected, but not relatives and, until this trip, not friends. They do not agree politically, Leko, my grandfather reports, is pro-fascist, though my grandfather himself is not.

What is Philip Strong doing here? Maybe it is a bit of self-motivated opportunism. Perhaps he senses history coming and is cleverly placing himself squarely in its path.

Once they arrive in Berlin, Leko will strike up an acquaintance with a fellow name Otto Fuerbringer. This Otto fellow knows Berlin well so they all start travelling around town together. Otto is a Kansas City reporter, tall and handsome, my grandfather reports, a Harvard man. One day he will become the managing editor of Time Magazine. These are the sorts of people idly wandering around Hitler?s Germany in 1937, visiting all the various art museums, gardens and zoos (?the keeper who did the animal feeding was a born comedian.?)

Five years later, my grandfather will no longer be in the reserve, he will be very active. ....

Is not insane, the acceptance of the premise that Willard Robertson arrived in NOLA from New Haven, CT as middle aged
sales rep. for soon to fail Steelcraft Boats, soon left his wife and two kids, promptly marrying the 23 year old secretary
of the NOLA Steelcraft office, was driving the car in 1959 his young wife was killed in, and just happened to stay in business eight more years with his deceased wife's father, Ernest Gossom despite remarrying in 1962 and starting a
new family, founding and funding both INCA and Truth or Consequences and sponsoring Gordon Novel, on the way
to becoming, literally from scratch as the insane or incurious simply accept, to rise to multi-millionaire king maker of
both the McKeithen and Garrison political careers? Tooth Fairy probably has an authorative explanation...is he a member
here?

Quote
....All of the other Volkswagen regional distributors were, to say the least, a cut above Robertson, both in wealth and in imported automobile marketing and servicing.

JFK Revisited crams a lot of information into very short segments in the two-hour film and (it seems) the target audience is people who are already familiar with the basic details of the JFK assassination and the investigations that followed.

The Clay Shaw trial isn't mentioned in the film (it's only mentioned that Shaw denied working for the CIA and that the HSCA confirmed he did have a relationship with the CIA) but neither is the Tippit shooting or Gen. Walker stuff.

Less than a minute was spent on Clay Shaw so your thread title is a little ridiculous.

Many things related to the Kennedy assassination were left out due to time constraints, not dishonesty. They were required to keep the film no longer than two-hours.

An extended version will be released in February.

Shaw and Garrison were performers in a distraction OP. They played their parts read their lines, no federal reinvestigation until 1975, mission accomplished.

For us Dummies, it might be a good idea in your opening spiel to give a brief summation of where your following research leads because reading between the lines and trying to figure out what the heck you are trying to say, makes me skip a lot of your posts. Don't get me wrong I appreciate all the effort but sometimes it's just too difficult to make a link between your research and the JFK assassination.

The late Tom Purvis pointed out that William P. Burke, CIA Southeast Domestic Contacts director since 1949,
had married a former Comus queen who was the daughter of a Comus queen and Burke's daughter was also selected by the anonymous Comus as his queen. This information is literally etched in stone on the grave memorials of those three generations.

When I checked Burke's wedding announcement, it said his best man was Brainerd Walker Spencer.

Description of Brainerd Walker Spencer (In my last post, I included three images from a Hill School, Pottstown, PA, yearbook showing that Spencer, Phil Strong, and CD Jackson were all schoolmates.)

Phil Strong was the son of Benjamin Strong, Jr. In 1954, Phil Strong, USMC reserve Captain and founder of the O.S.S. recruit training center in 1942, used his combined contacts as CIA Science Director and friend of Lockheed's Kelly Johnson, to earn Phil Strong the title of "Father of the U2".

In 1936, reserve USMC Captain Philip G Strong quit his job in banking to conduct an extended walking tour through Germany and eventually, into the Soviet Union, interviewing young people in countries on his route.
General Philip G Strong's grandson has his letters,

Otto Fuerbringer was working in Berlin in 1936, as a correspondent for a St. Louis newspaper when he gave
Phil Strong a post olympics, tour of Berlin.

In 1963 Otto Fuerbringer was editor-in-chief at Time magazine. He likely approved Stolley's purchase of the Zapruder film. Less than four weeks later, Fuerbringer approved a Time cover and feature article of Guy de Rothschild. I guess the beginnings of the WC was "back page, stuff".

The following is part of what Ralph Schoenman wrote to the editor of "The Nation" by 2 March 2006 in response to Max Holland's article about Garrison, Clay Shaw, Schoenman, and the "Paese Sera" article.

Max Holland has engaged for years in propagating disinformation on behalf of the CIA concerning the investigation of its role in the official execution of John F. Kennedy. Holland’s Nation article expatiates upon his fabricated thesis that Jim Garrison’s evidence of the CIA’s role in the Kennedy murder derived from a series of articles in Paese Sera in 1967.

I sent those articles to Jim Garrison in my capacity as director of the Who Killed Kennedy? committee in London, whose members and supporters included Bertrand Russell, Hugh Trevor-Roper, Arnold Toynbee, Field Marshall Sir Claude Auchinleck and Lord Boyd Orr. The Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation, of which I was then executive director, had conducted an extended investigation of the role of the CIA in fomenting and coordinating brutal repression, disappearances and assassinations, which culminated in a military putsch in Greece. Our Save Greece Now Committee unearthed concrete data regarding the role of the CIA and the Greek colonels that helped mobilize the movement for which Deputy Grigoris Lambrakis paid with his life. In the aftermath, our committee and its Greek leader, Michael Peristerakis, led a demonstration of more than 1 million that brought down the regime. [emphasis added]

CIA activity across Europe led Paese Sera to undertake a six-month investigation into the role in Italy of the CIA, with its plans for a military coup. The CIA colonels’ coup in Greece unfolded shortly after Paese Sera‘s prescient series. Prominent writers and intellectuals, including Rossana Rossanda, K.S. Karol, Lelio Basso, Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir, supported Paese Sera.

This investigation was entirely unrelated to events in the United States or the assassination of John F. Kennedy. It was fortuitous that the CIA front organizations in Italy that emerged from CIA plans to overthrow the Italian government included Centro Mondiale Commerciale and Permindex, of which Clay Shaw was a director in New Orleans.

Jim Garrison was well on the trail of Shaw and his role as a CIA handler of Lee Harvey Oswald before Paese Sera published its series of articles.  When I sent them to Garrison, he had already charged Shaw in relation to the murder of Kennedy. Jim found the Paese Sera series confirmatory and important, but the articles were not admissible as evidence in court.

[...]

. . . . . .

My comments:

Garrison charged Shaw on the same day he arrested him, 1 March 1967.

The "Paese Sera" article was published on 4 March 1967.

Richard Billings wrote in his diary on 16 March 1967 that Garrison had received “a copy of a French newspaper (L’Humanité) article that supposedly mentions Shaw’s work in Italy.”

The "L' Humanite" article had been translated into English for Garrison and was based on the "Paese Sera" article.

Garrison met with "Saturday Evening Post" writer James Phelan in Las Vegas on 3/05/67 and told him that Shaw had masterminded a Loeb-and-Leopold-like "homosexual thrill-kill" assassination of JFK.

After he received the "L' Humanite article," Garrison changed his theory against Shaw to "He organized the assassination for the CIA!!!"

Likely true, that Moscow propaganda made hay with Garrison.

Also probably true Shaw was a CIA asset, possibly monitoring LHO due to the latter's G2/DGI connections, and his history in Russia.

I strongly doubt Shaw was involved in the JFKA.

Garrison's father-in-law's 1968 Obit was the "Rosetta Stone" in my research and led to this confirmation. Since I came upon it as a last step, it did not influence the
direction of my research, only confirming whatI had already found, spurred by my discovery of that Obit.

Was world-travelling businessman Shaw a voluntary Domestic Contacts source from 1948 to 1956?

Yes, or no?

Please explain to me what a "highly paid contract source is," J. K. McDonald . . . I mean B. Cole.
