CBS Practices Stenography
Their recent report on Jefferson Morley and and new JFK assassination documents was not journalism. It was stenography.
This is pretty shoddy journalism - she essentially gave him the microphone to tell his story and didn't challenge his claims; but it's the CBS Sunday Morning show where, from what I've seen over the years, they do these type of softer pieces. Moriarty in particular appears to do stories like this: personality pieces and not hard news pieces. By that measure this is standard work. Still, soft shouldn't mean you let someone go completely unchallenged. A little pushback, please. Mr. Morley, after all, is accusing people who aren't around to defend themselves of murder and treason. And it would have made a more interesting piece too.
As Fred quotes Morley in his linked piece, Morley now admits he's a conspiracy theorist (@ 5:14):
Morley: "The official story is that one man alone killed the president for no reason. We know that's not true. Lee Harvey Oswald was not a lone nut. He was a known quantity to top CIA officers right before President Kennedy went to Dallas. We need an explanation of that story and we still don't have it."
Well, not even theorist but believer.
I guess this means that Morley's threat to sue CBS for defamation for characterizing him as a "conspiracy theorist" is moot? If not he could testify on CBS's behalf. "Your honor, the defense would like to call as a friendly witness, Mr. Jefferson Morley."
He continues to repeat this inaccuracy that the CIA was monitoring Oswald's every move. He was a "known quantity" to them. C'mon. He simply was not. And neither was the FBI monitoring him (see Hosty's testimony). It's interesting and revealing that he seldom mentions the FBI. He's clearly after the CIA and the FBI's actions are of little concern.
