Trump melts down as Feds raid Mar-A-Lago, MAGA nation braces for possible indictment

It’s never happened in U.S. history, federal agents searching the home of a former president. MSNBC Chief Legal Correspondent, Ari Melber reports on the Trump Mar-a-Lago raid, how it sets a new legal precedent and “the thicket of legal implications” it has.

The FBI has a confidential source within Donald Trump’s ranks with detailed knowledge of Mar-a-Lago, per Newsweek. You see why these DOJ probes take this long, right? It’s that complex. But at this point Trump can’t trust ANYONE around him. Closing in on all sides.

The FBI seized about a dozen boxes in raid of Trump home in Florida. These are documents that Trump stole and stashed at Mar a lago which he refused to turn over after the National Archives ordered him to.

The FBI issued subpoenas to multiple Republican lawmakers in Pennsylvania today, per PennLive. It’s more clear than ever that the DOJ is in ramp up mode.

Excellent Twitter thread on search warrants and subpoenas from an FBI veteran.

Peter Strzok @petestrzok

I used both consent and search warrants dozens of times over the course of my career to recover classified govt info - but never a subpoena. Let’s talk subpoenas and why they’re not used to recover classified material from those not authorized to have it.

Facts:

Rep. Eric Swalwell @RepSwalwell

Consider this: the FBI didn’t broadcast they searched Trump’s home. They didn’t even send agents in FBI jackets. The only reason we know it happened is because TRUMP told us. The FBI didn’t try to embarrass Trump. The guy who publicized it should be the one who shows the warrant.

The NY Times is reporting (today 8/11) this: "Former President Donald J. Trump received a subpoena this spring in search of documents that federal investigators believed he had failed to turn over earlier in the year, when he returned boxes of material he had improperly taken with him upon moving out of the White House, three people familiar with the matter said…"

If that's true and he refused to turn over the documents - assuming that was what was asked - then why is the raid not warranted? He's denying an authorized court order.

This happens every time: what we think we know on Day One changes with what we learn on Day Two and Three. Always need to wait before jumping ahead of ourselves. That would be, er, me.
