The Sixth Floor Museum recently added a temporary display of artifacts of the former book depository.

“Fragments, the Museum’s newest special exhibition explores the history of the Texas School Book Depository Building. Most famous for being the site of the assassination of President Kennedy in November 1963, the building’s story began at the turn of the 20th century and continues today. Having served as a warehouse for plows, tractors, groceries and books, the building sat empty for years while the community wrestled with its complicated legacy. It then evolved into an administrative site for Dallas County and, finally, a museum that preserves the memory of the assassination, the legacy of President Kennedy—and their effects on the city of Dallas and the country. “

“Functional elements, many of which have been unseen for decades, are celebrated for the beauty of their design and encourage reflection on the importance of the building’s history and preservation. The building’s history is explored through objects that were once part of the building itself. These disparate parts, fragments of a larger whole and representative of different chapters in the building’s existence, are examined on their own merits. Historic images evoke the 1910s, 1950s, 1960s, 1980s and today. Artists interpret the space and its history. The installation, made up of 33 objects, marks the passage of time from the building’s founding to its present, and by doing so, considers its future.
Fragments is on view November 3, 2021 – July 3, 2022 in the Seventh Floor Galleries. The exhibition is included with Museum admission “
