Title: Jimmy Carter Nearing the End
Post by: Michael T. Griffith on February 23, 2023, 03:02:22 PM
Former president Jimmy Carter appears to be on death's door. A few news outlets jumped the gun last week and reported Carter had passed. Well, he nearly passed. He has now declined further medical intervention and has entered hospice care to spend his final days with family members.

Even many Republicans have expressed praise for Carter's honesty, integrity, and decency. I would have voted for Ford in '76 and for Reagan in '80 over Carter, but Carter did a lot of good things for America and the world, such as the Camp David Peace Accords, sweeping deregulation, holding federal spending to moderate increases, ordering a large defense buildup after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, and his willingness to admit that he made a mistake in trusting the Soviets.

Jimmy Carter was certainly one of the most honest, decent men to occupy the White House in the last 100 years.

Nice man.  I admire his religious faith, but he was a terrible president.  He bungled everything including the Iran hostage crisis.  At least he will pass knowing that he was not the worst president in modern history.  That honor goes hands down to Ukraine Joe and his clown show.

I think that's going too far. Carter instituted massive deregulation that greatly boosted the economy and saved Americans hundreds of millions of dollars. He deregulated natural gas, the airline industry, the trucking industry, the railroad industry, and even the beer industry. He supported the completion of the oil pipeline in Alaska. He held federal spending to one of its lowest growth rates in the last 70 years. In response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, Carter asked for a massive increase in defense spending and forthrightly said he was wrong for having trusted the Soviets.

I don't think we can fairly blame Carter for the military's poor planning and execution of the Iran hostages rescue mission. However, Carter deserves great blame for causing the hostage crisis in the first place by betraying the Shah of Iran and enabling the mullahs to seize power. The mullahs quickly proved to be twice as repressive as the Shah had been.

Your view is simplistic and unjustifiably partisan.

".. more commonly known as Navvab Safavi, was an Iranian Shia cleric and founder of the Fada'iyan-e Islam group....After the 1953 coup against Iran's prime minister Muhammad Musaddiq,[21] Navvab Safavi congratulated the Shah and said:

The country was saved by Islam and with the power of faith . . . The Shah and prime minister and ministers have to be believers in and promoters of, shi'ism, and the laws that are in opposition to the divine laws of God . . . must be nullified . . . The intoxicants, the shameful exposure and carelessness of women, and sexually provocative music . . . must be done away with and the superior teachings of Islam . . . must replace them. With the implementation of Islam's superior economic plan, the deprivation of the Muslim people of Iran, and the dangerous class difference would end.[22]...
....The main difference with the later founder of the Islamic Republic, though, and a radical one, is that he never advocated for a theocracy, as he accepts the monarchy, where "the Shah is viewed as the father of the family. He should be benevolent and fatherly in ruling the people. His faith and virtues should be such that people learn from him religious faith and virtues. He, as a father, should know how everyone is doing and that no one will go hungry or lack clothing. Then, 'as long as there is anyone alive in the family no one would dare to be disrespectful toward him, not to mention wanting to expel him from his home and family. Yes! The Shah must be a father, to be a father and the Shah.'".[38]

Apart from Ayatollah Khomeini, Navvab's vision would influence many other important players of the Islamic Republic, for instance the scholar Morteza Motahhari,[39] or being, with Jalal Al-e Ahmad and Ahmad Fardid, one of the main ideological pillars of the former conservative president of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.[40] The current Supreme Leader of Iran, Ali Khamenei, goes as far as saying "I have no doubt that it was Navab Safavi who first kindled the fire of revolutionary Islam in my heart."[41] .."

SAVAK - Wikipedia
SAVAK ( Persian: ساواک, abbreviation for سازمان اطلاعات و امنیت کشور Sâzemân-e Ettelâ'ât va Amniat-e Kešvar, lit. '"Intelligence and Security Organization of the Country"') [2] was the secret police, domestic security and intelligence service in Iran during the reign of the Pahlavi dynasty.

Historians indicate Kissinger, Rockefeller, and McCloy aggravated relations with Iran's revolutionary regime resulting from persuading Carter to admit the Shah for cancer treatment in the U.S.

The G.O.P. tradition, 1940, Willkie wittingly accepted campaign financing from the third reich.
