Starting with the oldest of the cases included in the thread title, the Ray Crump murder accusation and trial. Crump was fortunate to draw an apparently capable defense attorney, despite being unable personally to afford the cost of capable legal counsel.

I thought this was a misleading start....

Defense attorney Dovey Roundtree has made numerous conflicting claims since "winning" acquittal of defendant Crump in 1965. If the Mary Meyer funeral VIP list was not a wake up call for  Ms. Roundtree, that her client was accused of the shooting death of one of the most connected people in the midst of cold war Washington, what would have been? Perhaps a picture of Meyer in bed at the White House, with JFK. Also within a day or so after these details were published, the initial reporting that Cord Meyer was an "author and lecturer," was superceded by reporting of his employment with CIA. Not that the names of Angleton, Janney the personnel director at CIA, and Mrs. Samuel Lanahan, aka Scottie Fitzgerald, Mary's college roommate who described her "brothers" as Richard and Nathan Ober, Richard being a key CIA officer close to Angleton and later, Nixon. Walton, Bradlee, Bundy, and Kay Graham would also make most defense attorneys in Ms. Roundtree's situation, stand up and take notice.

The segment above, from this author, Ms. McCabe, as told to her by Ms. Roundtree, certainly seems a Leo Damore influenced "set up" for Peter Janney's 2012 book, Mary's Mosaic :

Dovey Johnson Roundtree: A Legal Pioneer, Finally Getting Her Due
1914-2018

By KATIE MCCABE December 30, 2018
National Magazine Award winner Katie McCabe is the co-author, with Dovey Johnson Roundtree, of Roundtree’s 2009 memoir, Justice Older than the Law, scheduled for 2019 re-release by Algonquin Books under the title Mighty Justice.

Since Mark Oblazney happened to be Leo Damore's researcher, hopefully he may be able to contribute his impression as to the degree of influence on Ms. Roundtree that Leo Damore and the prior authors had, who pointed Damore in the direction Ms. Roundtree seems to have gone towards what Peter Janney then "fleshed out," before it "flamed out."

The alleged Oswald note dropped off at the FBI's Dallas office to the attention of James Hosty that was destroyed instead of being preserved and shared with the Warren Commission.

As happened in 1963 - 64, exposed by the 1975 Frank Church Senate Committee inquiry and the follow on, HSCA investigations, the mission of the FBI that eclipses its mandated purpose is, no matter the consequences, the Director's perceived need to prevent the FBI - DOJ from "looking bad".

Justice Dept. Investigating Years-Old Leaks and Appears Focused on Comey
An inquiry into years-old disclosures of classified information is highly unusual and leaves law enforcement officials open to accusations of politicizing their work.
January 16, 2020
.....
Law enforcement officials are scrutinizing at least two news articles about the F.B.I. and Mr. Comey, published in The New York Times and The Washington Post in 2017, that mentioned the Russian government document, according to the people familiar with the investigation. Hackers working for Dutch intelligence officials obtained the document and provided it to the F.B.I., and both its existence and the collection of it were highly classified secrets, the people said.

The document played a key role in Mr. Comey’s decision to sideline the Justice Department and announce in July 2016 that the F.B.I. would not recommend that Hillary Clinton face charges in her use of a private email server to conduct government business while secretary of state.
.....
The latest investigation involves material that Dutch intelligence operatives siphoned off Russian computers and provided to the United States government. The information included a Russian analysis of what appeared to be an email exchange during the 2016 presidential campaign between Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Democrat of Florida who was also the chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee at the time, and Leonard Benardo, an official with the Open Society Foundations, a democracy-promoting organization whose founder, George Soros, has long been a target of the far right.

In the email, Ms. Wasserman Schultz suggested that then-Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch would make sure that Mrs. Clinton would not be prosecuted in the email case. Both Ms. Wasserman Schultz and Mr. Benardo have denied being in contact, suggesting the document was meant to be Russian disinformation.

That document was one of the key factors that drove Mr. Comey to hold a news conference in July 2016 announcing that investigators would recommend no charges against Mrs. Clinton. Typically, senior Justice Department officials would decide how to proceed in such a high-profile case, but Mr. Comey was concerned that if Ms. Lynch played a central role in deciding whether to charge Mrs. Clinton, Russia could leak the email.
.....
Whether the document was fake remains an open question. But American officials at the time did not believe that Ms. Lynch would hinder the Clinton email investigation, and neither Ms. Wasserman Schultz nor Mr. Benardo had any inside information about it. Still, if the Russians had released the information after the inquiry was closed, it could have tainted the outcome, hurt public confidence in the Justice Department and sowed discord.

Sadly, Tom, Dovey's mental faculties were quickly diminishing the last few years of her life (i.e., she call Leo Damore 'Leo Darosha' when I spoke to her.)  Leo's questions to Dovey already had an answer, (leading the witness).  I'd still like to know the whereabouts of 'that missin' .38, though.
