Legendary mobster Whitey Bulger found dead in prison

By Emily Birnbaum - 10/30/18 01:17 PM EDT

Notorious Boston mob boss James "Whitey" Bulger was found dead at a West Virginia prison on Tuesday, federal officials told NBC News.

Bulger, 89, was reportedly killed at Hazleton Penitentiary, a federal prison where he'd recently been transferred, according to multiple reports. It is not yet clear why Bulger was moved.

The penitentiary where Bulger was killed is known as one of the federal system's roughest prisons, according to local outlet WVNews.

Unnamed prison officials have told US media that Bulger, who used a wheelchair, was pushed by the inmates into a corner of his cell not in the view of security cameras.
But despite their efforts to hide, CCTV cameras captured at least two inmates engaging in the attack that left Bulger bloody and "unrecognizable", according to the New York Times.
Officials say a metal padlock tucked into a sock - known in prisons as a "lock-in-the-sock" - was wielded like a mace during the attack.
According to several reports, Bulger's eyes had been gouged out, or possibly detached from his skull due to the force of the beating he received.
His tongue also may have been cut out, several US outlets have reported. The FBI has so far refused to comment on Bulger's death.

"Lock-in-a-sock". It is interesting that in the movie, "Bad Boys" with Sean Penn, Penn puts some full-soda-cans in a sock when he is expecting to have to defend himself.  That movie is from around 1980, it's been remade too. Actually, a pretty good movie imo.

Yes in both official and unofficial capacities . (One of the Softball teams I played on used to load up the cooler in the liquor store he used for one of his hangouts)

Okay.  But the real question is... what position did you play on your softball team?
