i remember back in 1972, Gerorge McGovern in a desperate attempt to save his campaign, proposed giving everyone a check for $1000. if you adjust for inflation, that's an even bigger handout than what is being proposed now. It didn't help. He lost 49 of 50 states, winning only Massachusetts and DC. Handouts don't give anybody greater buying power. They just give everyone a temporary sugar high.
1972 was the first election I voted in and being a brain damaged liberal back then, I cast my first vote for McGovern. I never regretted that decision. Even though my political POV has changed, McGovern was a much better man than Nixon from a character standpoint.
