This is the website I found this morning that contains the reference to the "brass slug".

The pages are not numbered but if you slide down about 2/3 of the way, the last paragraph on the relevant page contains the passage where Young states there was a brass slug in the envelope.

There is more on this page than just his "What Price a Rose" essay and you have to figure out what Young was telling the interviewer and what he was reading from what he had written. I'm not entirely sure if he was reading from the essay or from the notes he took that day. Perhaps I was correct originally when I said the essay doesn't contain the reference to the brass slug and that reference is from his notes. See if you can figure it out. In any event, Young does seem to say he saw a brass slug that had come out of the envelope, an assertion only he seems to have made.

Gaffes and lies are both commonplace. The statements he makes are false but it's hard to say for sure whether he know they are false and is lying or whether his beliefs have just diverged from reality.

I doubt that he knowingly tells untruths. He does get confused a lot though. That's why I try not to engage with him often. It's frustrating trying to get him to understand that he's wrong when he's wrong.  And he's wrong a lot.
