This is the description of the motorcade route published in the Nov 19 issue of the Dallas Times Herald:

"From the airport, the President's party will proceed to Mockingbird Lane to Lemmon and then to Turtle Creek, turning south to Cedar Springs.
The motorcade will then pass through downtown on Harwood and then west on Main, turning back to Elm at Houston and then out Stemmons Freeway to the Trade Mart."

The same day, the Morning News described the motorcade path downtown as travelling from "Harwood to Main, Main to Houston, Houston to Elm, Elm under the Triple Underpass to Stemmons Freeway, and on to the Trade Mart"

The motorcade route published in the 11/21 issue of the Times Herald shows the same route as previously described, including the Elm jog:

The articles you quoted make the point very clear. There was no change to the planned route of the motorcade. It was ALWAYS intended to make the turn on Houston to bet over to Elm St. It is the only route that made any sense. The planners wanted to stay on Main St. all through downtown Dallas.

The story of the assassination is loaded with what-ifs. What-if one of the other sites considered for the luncheon had been selected. It is likely the motorcade would have gone in the opposite direction. From Love Field, the motorcade would have gone west toward I-35 (Stemmons), headed south to Main St. and gone east on Main St. through downtown before taking the quickest route to whichever site had been selected. Had that happened, Oswald would have had a very difficult long range cross shot at JFK on Main St. with Jackie in the way. Most likely Oswald wouldn't have even attempted the shot and most of us would have never heard about him.

The maps that didn't show the move from Main to Elm on Houston were simply not detailed enough. They gave a general idea of where the motorcade was going without the detail that ALL of the descriptions of the route contained.

The claim that the route was changed is a red herring. It was never intended to stay on Main to reach the Stemmons Freeway. If the motorcade was going to stay on Main, it would have had to bypass the Stemmons Freeway and go all the way to Industrial Parkway which could have taken them to the Trade Mart but that option would have made no sense as it would have been a longer and slower router. The Texas trip was on a tight schedule as they were  trying to jam as many appearances as possible into a tight time window.

Why do conspiracy hobbyists keep trying to make an issue of the motorcade route when it was the only one that made sense given the selection of the Trade Mart as the location for the luncheon.

Nope. There never was a route with a direct Main-to-Stemmons turn. As I've said, the interchange to the Stemmons on ramp is designed to prevent westbound traffic on  Main from entering the ramp.
