Why Do We Members Keep Having To Sign In Here?
« on: March 05, 2026, 06:19:50 PM »

Several times per day throughout the week, the Sign-In page pops up and members of the Forum
have to sign in.  Is something bad going on here?

It's a Forum security issue concerning Denial of Service (DoS) attacks.

A Denial of Service (DoS) attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or network by overwhelming it with a flood of Internet traffic, making it unavailable to users.

These attacks can cause system crashes, slow performance, and, in DDoS (Distributed DoS) cases, use thousands of compromised devices (botnets) to flood the target, ie this Forum.

When I require Logged out members to Login at random times of my choosing, this tactic works in combating these attacks by reducing the number of pages that the Bots etc can attack.

Thanks so much, Duncan.  I appreciate you letting me know.

Nowadays, we can never be careful enough with the going-on with these stupid bots and attacks.

Sadly, things surely aren't as simple as they were when the internet was fresh and new.

Duncan, another (blog) site that I frequent, and typically stay logged in to, now has a CAPTCHA form to complete in order to see the pages. Their form is just one check box to click to prove one is human. That is at least quick, easy and simple. And we typically stay logged in and do not have to go through the routine of logging in very often.

CAPTCHA forms can be accessed, and in many cases bypassed by advanced bots.
