I don't think that the 3 shots, 3 hits scenario is the "alternative" scenario. Rather, it was the original scenario that is established by the evidence. Everyone who looked at the evidence initially concluded that there were 3 shots, the first hitting JFK in the neck, the second hitting JBC in the back and the third hitting JFK in the head. It was the WC lawyers who came up with the SBT as an alternative scenario. The main reason for it, as Arlen Specter has admitted (see As a guest, you are not allowed to view links.
Register or Login) was the conclusion that the bullet that passed through JFK had to have gone on to hit JBC. They concluded that it hit JBC in the back. The real problem with the SBT is that it conflicts with several large bodies of well-corroborated evidence. There is a much simpler explanation of what happened to the first shot that does fit with all the bodies of well-corroborated evidence. The WC did not realize that there is a reasonable explanation that fits the evidence, so they developed the SBT and persuaded themselves the the evidence had to be wrong. The thigh was not injured on the third shot. According to all the evidence, the thigh wound appears to have been made by the butt end of CE399. All based on the 2.3 seconds of time it took for FBI personnel, who took 10-15 minutes of time to familiarize themselves with Oswald's rifle before test firing it. In the years since then, it has become obvious that there are Carcano owners/shooters out here in the world who can fire well placed shots with their rifles in a LOT faster times than 2.3 seconds.
