I have recalibrated my monitor yesterday, because I had some problems that some images appeared too dark or too bright. My monitor gamma now is set to 2.2 as it is recommended. Anyways....

To be sure I have made 3 screenshots, please let me know which one appears to you just right in terms of brightness, contrast and gamma. Which ones do you prefer ?

Its near impossible to set a monitor by eye.  If you must there re a few tools that MIGHT help.  Adobe Gamma, found on some older versions of Photoshop ( up to 5.5 IIRC) is one, and Apple has a similar program embedded in OSX.

If you want your monitor set up to the specs YOU prefer, the only real way to do it is with a monitor calibration device.

And even with one of these you need to decide just how bright you want it, as there is no real "standard' for digital imaging and brightness settings depend a lot on the brightness of your room.

Here is a partial listing of products to calibrate and profile a monitor.....

thanks,

I was using this site to calibrate the monitor gamma:
As a guest, you are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
and this (click in the left menue on "Monitor Gamma":
As a guest, you are not allowed to view links. Register or Login
and also the calibration for black/white-point.

everything is now adjusted accordingly.

I also downloaded the tool "QuickGamma" but I could not get the Black Level "A" and "B" to work, it just gave me complete black bars for both even with my monitor brightness set to full (100%).
So I deinstalled it.

Craig,

What color temperature is recommended when working with images (common formats jpeg, bmp, gif png) and videos. I have read that 6500K is best but I personally find that makes ecerything look flat, my setting atm is 9300 by default, wouold you recommend a lower value or is that in the eye of the beholder and does not make much difference ?

Color is huge, and 9300 is way out of the ball park.  6500k is the defacto standard for both sRGB and ARGB.  I wold reccomend you go that route.  I can tell you your eyes will soon find 6400K very pleasent as they quickly adapt to the chosen whitepoint.

I have a NEC 2690 monitor, calibrated and profiled with Spectraviw software anf a Color Munki puck.

I use different colors paces and color spaces depending on the end use of my files.  For printing either by Epson or on a large sheet fed or web printing press ( were the bulk of my work goes) I use a white point of 5000k and I get near perfect screen to print matches. I generally use ColorMatch color space for reproduction files.

With a simple click of a mouse the NEC allows me to switch to a different setting, such as one for web use files.  I use a white point of 6500K for web and output in sRBG color space.

I would suggest that you use 6500k.  And work your files in sRGB.

2nd is the best i think, deep shadows show details and high lights aren't burn.

I don't remember the name of it, but somewhere I have a disc that came with a graphics card to adjust the picture and one screen had monsters in the shadows and you would adjust the brightness and contrast until you could barely see them. I think it was called 3DEEP from ATI. Don't know if any Web site still has the program.
