Hi Jim, Originally, the media claimed the riots started as the result of a police shooting where Mark Duggan was shot and killed by police. As a guest, you are not allowed to view links.
Register or LoginHowever, this is untrue. There was a peaceful protest involving around 300 people who were unhappy with the shooting and the answers being given by the police at the time. But that protest ended peacefully and the protesters dispersed afterwards. The riots started after this protest. There was no genuine political motivation for the riots. Opportunistic and criminal pure and simple. Thugs took advantage of the police shooting to kick off and cause mayhem. Because the police were not prepared for it they were ordered not to intervene at the beginning because they lacked riot gear. So people saw on the news people running riot and smashing things up and shops being looted whilst the police stood by and watched. Which caused a massive escalation with thousands more taking to the streets in the following days in London, Birmingham and Manchester. It is not political and neither is the looting about poverty. People of all ages and from every walk of life have now been arrested and charged. Social workers, teachers, army personnel, the unemployed, a millionaire's daughter, 12 years old to 60 years old. London gangs were also involved. Around 2000 people have now been arrested using CCTV footage. The courts have been kept open and running day and night all weekend sentencing people. Some stories coming out are truly disgusting. An ambulance crew responding to an emergency call to help a 1 year old baby who had a temperature of 39 degrees and had suffered mild seizures were attacked by thugs and stopped from attending the address. The crew had to call for a police escort which took an hour and a half to arrive. An old aged pensioner has died after being attacked by a mob after he tried to stamp out a fire in the street. Three men died after they were run over for attempting to protect there neighbourhood. Just google "BBC News, London riots" for lots of info. Or YouTube for footage. All the best, Martin.
