When I was buying some printer ink at Staples last week I asked how much it would cost to have a large map scanned in. Only $2.00. So tonight I had them scan in my HSCA map at the highest resolution their scanner could handle. As a guest, you are not allowed to view links.
Register or LoginThis is a huge map. Martin, do you have any software which could scale this down to about 20 pixels per foot? Also, can you likewise upload your map showing the same area? I would like to start with this map and then add in details accurate for 11/22/63. Just for quick viewing I'll try uploading a smaller map that they scaled down for me to screen size. Well, somebody did it.

I'm getting a red square on the first link.

LN; So how did it happen then ?
CT; I don't know, I only know that it didn't happen the way the evidence says.
LN; We should not use evidence in this case ?
CT; Correct.

Yes, it's much too big. But I'd rather have it resized from the largest starting point.

Here it is underneath my visio drawing, some slight differences but it doesn't change things much. I hate to be cruel since you were nice enough to compare them, but am I to assume that the darker lines are from YOUR map and the lighter lines are from MY map? If so it appears that you have the face of the TSBS a couple of feet farther south than where it really was. You may not realize it but this detail is exactly how I discovered how far off the original West map was and how the HSCA was off. The standard I use is the distance from the middle of Main Street to the facade of the TSBD. The West map had that as 317.5 feet, as did most Cutler maps. Close enough for government work, but it wasn't accurate enough for the HSCA acoustical studies. So the HSCA commissioned its own map. But theirs came out at 319 feet. By photogrammetry I was able to show that the distance was really 320 feet. Then the original WPA map confirmed that the building was 320 feet away from the center of Main Street. I would hope that you could take these correct values into account and redesign your map. I don't use Visio, but I assume that it would give you the flexibility to compose objects and drop them onto the map wherever you wish. Do you have to do that by sight or can you specify Cartesian Coordinates? Thanks, Tony

Here it is underneath my visio drawing, some slight differences but it doesn't change things much. I had trouble seeing all the details on your Visio drawing on my laptop so I printed it out. Here is what it looked like to me, so correctly me if I get any details wrong. It appears that the hash marks on the margins are in feet. Is that correct? It looks like you have the face of the TSBD at 158. Then the north curb of Main Street at 470 and the south curb at 514. That would make the middle of the street at 492. That makes the standard distance from the middle of Main Street to the TSBD as 334 feet. Incorrect. It is 320 feet. Also, I wonder if Visio would allow you to change the distance on the side markers? I would much prefer that the middle of Main Street start at 0. That is what I use as the origin in Cartesian Coordinates. If it helps your design any the width of Main Street and also Elm Street is 40 feet including the curbs. I think it will help all researchers of every stripe if we all start with the most accurate map possible.
