Christmas Treats  (Read 436 times)

Hmmm...

The stores are starting to roll out their holiday season goodies. Enjoying a large Lindt "Swiss Classic" 600g bar. Not sure if it's made in Europe--there's a production plant in the US. This particular one says imported by a co. in Toronto and manufactured by a co. in Switzerland.

I always get a Terry's Chocolate Orange. The ones in North America are made here. My dad remembers getting an actual tree-picked orange in his Christmas stocking, the only orange the kids saw for the whole year. Maybe the chocolate version is supposed to recall that tradition in the UK.

A can of Quality Street. They're also made in North America now and probably not as good as those made in the UK. A generation ago, they were quite a treat to have for company.

Usually, I get a big bag of "chicken bones" candy at Costco every year for Christmas. Seems enough assorted nuts can be had on-forum.

Oh boy, a food thread!! clapxx  The off-est "off topic" topic I've seen, but we have to eat, and   when could be a better time than the holidays to share food creations ( or store offerings)?

My daughter makes candy apples for everyone.  I have seen these at the stores and they retail for around 10.00.

She takes a Granny Smith, dips it in caramel twice, and chocolate twice, and rolls it in nuts, or colored sugar.  The caramel/ chocolate covering adds about 3/4 inch to the apple's diameter.  You have to use a knife and fork to eat it.

We are also big fans of Chex Party Mix (home made, so we can control the seasoning amount), and another delightful confection called "Puppy Chow"

Puppy Chow

Ingredients:

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup butter
1 cup chocolate chips
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
9 cups Crispix cereal (any flavor)
1-1/2 cups powdered sugar

Instructions:

1. Combine peanut butter, butter and chocolate chips in a microwave safe bowl.

2. Microwave for a minute, then mix. Add 1/2 tsp. vanilla. Stir well.

3. Place the 9 cups of Crispix(or other similar shaped cereal) in a  large bowl.

4. Pour the peanut butter-chocolate mixture over the cereal and carefully mix, till all is covered.

5. Coat them evenly with powdered sugar, l.

This is seriously yummy stuff.

Since this forum is international, how about Christmas treat recipes from around the world?  I would love to have a special bread or dessert recipe from another country, just the way you or your family make it.

Re: Caramel apples!

I used to buy off-the-shelf caramel spread for spreading on my toast, but Costco started carrying a superior product called La Paila" As a guest, you are not allowed to view links. Register or Login. It's made in Argentina and costs about $3.99 for a 850 g bottle. (Trying my hand at conversion) that's:

   16 Argentine pesos, or £2 50p (2 UK pounds 50 pence), or €3 (3 Euros).

I haven't tried to use it in candy apples. That's something I haven't eaten since I was a kid. You're fortunate to have someone to make it from scratch. I would opt, I think, for a sweeter apple like Gala or Honeycrisp. Nuts on the outside is a good idea.

The pretzels in store-bought party mix leaves my stomach slightly upset. Your recipe doesn't have any of those. Maybe I'll try it.

I noticed on a cooking show that the host added some vanilla to pancake mix and produced what amounted to do-nut pancakes. A nice variation for br'fast.

I'm trying to make my own basic white bread with a bread maker machine. My wife is going to try raisin bread for Christmas. I love fresh bread that's moist and tears apart in strings (good lard makes the difference). When I first cut it, I eat it with just butter!

Still working on my big Lindt bar. Just cut into a strawberry cheesecake. For many adults, Christmas is all about the eating.
