Not quite. Day did not know the country of origin immediately or the make and model.
It was not that easy to see MADE ITALY or know that Terni is a factory in Italy.
Fritz asked Weitzman was he thought it was and Weitzman said it looked like a Mauser.
That is where the rumor began. Only when Day got it back to the lab and examined it more carefully did he figure out that it was a Mannlicher-Carcano.
Weitzman was saying it was a Mauser even before Day examined it. It wasn't Day's fault.
But Weitzman did eventually admit he only glanced at the rifle from a distance and guessed wrong.

I'am not sure if you ever witnessed the footages inside the 6floor completely.
It's a matter of fact that Lt Day examind the rifle with a magnifying glasses as soon as it was recovered.
There is photographic evidence at hand just in case you doubt it. I can show it if needed.

He examined also the top part of the rifle with his glasses where the caliber was stamped on.

It was the crime of the century and we have to rely on an eyeball estimate from a distance of Weitzman?
It was nessecary to get the damn shells to the rifle.

What are they doing? Telling we are facing two different calibers. 6.5 and 7.65? Congratulations.

Lt Day was pretty much aware of the rifle caliber before the confusion on televison began to storm.

Mr. McCloy:
There was never any doubt in your mind what the rifle was from the minute you saw it?
Mr. Day:
No, sir; It was stamped right on there, 6.5, and when en route to the office with Mr. Odum, the
FBI agent who drove me in, he radioed it in, he radioed in what it was to the FBI over the air.

By the way i see no Weitzman nor anybody apart from Day and Fritz close to the rifle as it was discovered on footage from Alya.

Lt. Day with his magnifying glasses (and he used them) was aware at least of the caliber of the rifle.

Weitzman told the next day it a Mauser Caliber 7.65. Where is the sense in that?

Gerry, I would prefer shot slugs over shot pellets anytime  bulletxx
I find it interesting that a few of Jack Ruby's shipping boxes were found
on the 6th floor.

(To Gary Mack) Perhaps if you would release some of the first generation images you are hoarding at the 6th floor museum, researchers like myself, wouldn't be forced to rely on 2nd,3rd,4th generation copies, and then put up with you criticizing us when we do_

The 7.65 mm comes from Weitzman thinking it was a Mauser. 7.65 is the most popular caliber for a Mauser and Germany is the most frequent country of origin.
Day seeing the 6.5 mm does not tell him it is a Mannlicher-Carcano. There is nothing stamped on the rifle saying Mannlicher-Carcano and he was not an expert on foreign rifles.
He might not have even noticed the MADE ITALY or known that TERNI is  factory in Italy.

Anthony, there is a footage is discovered a few days ago on one of my CD discs i've bought on Ebay in 2000.
I should consider to upload it on Youtube. I've never done this. It's probably the time to do.

It contains images i've never seen before among the discover of the rifle on the six floor.
It shows the discover of the rifle but i realized that the most available Alyea footage is cutted in the recent documentations.
