I just got done doing a production of the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" and it got me to thinking-you could do a production of the play with characters from the JFK assassination saga. After all, there are similarities-JC and JFK are much revered in death. True, JFK didn't rise after three days, but he lives on like no other president-his name is invoked every time a young, charismatic, good-looking Democrat runs for President and tries to get elected on the strength of his JFK imitation. Oh, and he was evoked for Michael Dukakis, who was neither good-looking nor charismatic, but he was from Massachusetts, chose a running mate from Texas, and pointed with his thumb and forefinger at every opportunity. (I always said Dukakis should have gone on Saturday Night Live, he could've been famous for his JFK imitation.)
Anyway, without further ado (and to get back on topic) here is my cast of characters for "Jesus Christ Superstar"-The "JFK" version:
John F. Kennedy as Jesus-"after all, I've tried for three years, seems like thirty..."
Marilyn Monroe as Mary Magdalene-"I don't know how to love him..."
H.L. Hunt-as Caiphas-"for the sake of the Nation, this Jesus must die."
Right Wing Oilmen as the High Priests-"Must die! Must die! This Jesus must die!"
Republicans and revisionist historians as the Superstar Chorus-"Jesus Christ Superstar. Do you think you're what they say you are?"
Chief Justice Earl Warren as Pontius Pilate-"I wash my hands of your demolition!"
Lee Harvey Oswald as Judas-"God! I'll never, ever know why you chose me for your crime! Your foul, bloody crime!"
Conspiracy Theorists (Mark Lane, Jim Garrison, Penn Jones, James DiEugenio, Sylvia Meagher, Harold Weisberg, Oliver Stone and cast of thousands) as the Wailing Judas Chorus-"So long, Judas. Poor old Judas. So long, Judas. Poor old Judas."
Obviously, with many characters there are many possibilities. I am trying to fit Bobby, J. Edgar, LBJ and the military into it somehow. But this is what I have so far.
EDIT: Maybe J. Edgar Hoover as King Herod-"You're a joke, you're not the Lord...get out you King of the Jews!"
